FCL Components Unveils the FSM7SPA01 Series Radar Sensor

FCL Components Corporation, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has announced the release of its compact 60GHz radar sensor series, the FSM7SPA01. This innovative device is designed to accurately measure the presence and movement of individuals and objects at a highly precise distance, primarily leveraging the advantages of 60GHz millimeter-wave technology.

Enhancements Over Traditional Models

The FSM7SPA01 series represents a significant advancement over conventional 24GHz radar sensors. With higher resolution capabilities made possible by operating at the 60GHz frequency band, this sensor can detect the presence and motion of people along with the distance to various objects with an accuracy of up to 1mm over a maximum range of 7 meters (Note 1). In scenarios where a lens is employed, measurement ranges can extend to an impressive 20 meters.

Robust Environmental Adaptability

One of the standout features of the FSM7SPA01 radar sensor is its resilience to external environmental noise caused by temperature fluctuations, wind, and rain. It effectively penetrates various materials, allowing for precise measurements even with obstacles in the way.

Weighing only 0.6g and measuring just 12×12×2.45 mm, this lightweight sensor is also designed for low power consumption, permitting extended operational time which is ideal for a wide range of applications.

Two Distinct Models

FCL Components offers two variants of the FSM7SPA01 series:
1. FSM7SPA01-204001: Equipped with a human presence detection algorithm.
2. FSM7SPA01-204002: Features a distance-measuring algorithm.

These specifications make the sensor suitable for numerous applications, particularly within private spaces such as bathrooms and changing rooms, underlining its versatility and attention to privacy.

Human Presence Detection in Private Spaces

The sensor’s ability to detect human presence even in steamy conditions, such as in bathrooms where vapors can obscure visibility, enables functionalities like controlling light switches or alerting for emergencies based on identified distances. Unlike cameras, it respects privacy by not capturing facial or other personal data, making it reliable for use in sensitive environments.

Indoor and Vehicular Motion Detection

The FSM7SPA01 can distinguish between rapid and slow movements, providing insights into the dynamics of a room—such as counting the number of people entering or leaving. Its operation is reliable even in smoky environments, allowing it to serve as a safety device in emergency situations. Additionally, the sensor can monitor respiratory levels, enhancing functionalities related to work and rest status and triggering alarms if little to no movement is detected.

Distance Measurement for Inventory Management

The radar sensor can be invaluable in industrial settings by measuring levels in wastewater tanks, oil reserves, or managing inventory in warehouses. It can significantly reduce power consumption to around 3.1mW through intermittent operation, which allows for battery-powered applications and supports the development of maintenance-free management systems, comparing favorably against mechanical or ultrasonic alternatives.
