AI Patents Surpass 100,000 Grants, Reflecting Growing Interest in Agentic AI

The Growing World of AI Patents

In a significant development in the world of technology, IFI CLAIMS Patent Services has announced that the total number of granted AI patents has exceeded 100,000, reaching an impressive 107,279 patents as of 2025. This represents an astonishing 83 percent increase compared to three years ago, signaling a robust surge of interest and investment in artificial intelligence across various sectors.

The report, titled "IFI Insights: Inventing AI," released on July 28, 2026, tracks global patenting activities and showcases the substantial growth trajectory of AI technological advancements. The findings highlight a notable distinction between the overall trend in AI patents and specific categories like generative AI and agentic AI. While the total number of granted AI patents in the United States experienced a slight dip of about 7% from 2023, patents specifically related to generative AI continued to demonstrate steady growth, climbing 11% over the previous year.

Rising Interest in Agentic AI

The report reveals that agentic AI patents have captured a growing share of the patent landscape. The number of U.S. grants for agentic AI has surged by 14% from the previous year, and what’s even more remarkable is the sharp increase in applications pertaining to agentic technology. In 2025, agentic patent applications soared by 40% compared to 2024, marking a growth of 62% over the past two years. This sustained interest signifies a strategic focus on protecting innovative inventions in this groundbreaking field.
