The Launch of AI for Good Lab

The newly established AI for Good Lab, initiated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marks a significant step towards empowering developing and emerging economies to implement responsible artificial intelligence (AI). Announced at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026 in Geneva, the Lab focuses on three interconnected areas: preparations for national AI policies, skill development, and public AI infrastructure. Aiming for Inclusive AI Transformation

Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei, Chair of the AI for Good Impact Initiative, emphasized the pivotal moment we are in concerning AI implementation. According to her, "Countries are no longer debating whether AI can transform society; instead, they are focusing on how to implement it responsibly, inclusively, and at scale." The AI for Good Lab is designed to assist nations in translating proven concepts into measurable outcomes and capacities.

Similarly, Seizo Onoe, Director of the ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, highlighted the Lab's mission: "Every country deserves the opportunity to shape its future with AI. Our initiative embodies ITU's commitment to ensuring that AI's benefits reach all corners of the globe."

Comprehensive Support for National Along With Local Needs

To assist governments, the Lab will conduct preparedness assessments and provide policy guidance, enabling countries to identify their national priorities effectively. The programs for skill development focus on building inclusive talent networks that encompass policymakers, entrepreneurs, students, and innovators. The AI for Good Innovation Factory, a key component of the Lab, has so far engaged with over 200 startups across 88 countries, fostering a community of innovation and collaboration.

In addition to human resource development, the Lab will also enhance public AI infrastructure, giving countries access to essential resources such as open data sets, computing power, reusable AI models, and open-source tools. These resources will be pivotal for key sectors, including health, agriculture, education, and mobility.

Extending Reach Through Local Collaboration

The Lab builds upon the AI for Good Sandbox activities already in place in ten pilot countries, including Cameroon, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania, the UAE, Uzbekistan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. By partnering with the African Telecommunications Union, national governments, and ITU regional offices, the Lab aims to establish local centers and expand on successful projects, ensuring that the development of AI solutions is contextually relevant and beneficial.

With extensive experience in telecommunications, robotics, and national AI strategies, Dr. Almazrouei holds a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence for Wireless Communications and Computer Science and serves on the Board of Directors at the American University of Sharjah.
