Omron Invests in GridShare to Enhance Decentralized Energy Solutions
Omron Partners with GridShare for Decentralized Energy Management
In a significant move towards promoting sustainable energy solutions, Omron Social Solutions Corporation (OSS), headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, has announced its investment in GridShare Japan, a subsidiary of Itochu Corporation. This initiative, which also includes contributions from Kyushu Electric Power Company, Chubu Electric Power Mirai, Tokyu Land Corporation, and Lunar Energy Inc. from the United States, aims to bolster collaboration in the field of decentralized energy control.
1. Background and Objectives
As the adoption of renewable energy sources expands, stabilizing electricity supply and addressing fluctuations in renewable energy output have emerged as pressing societal challenges. In this context, the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) business model, which integrates the management of smaller decentralized energy sources—such as solar panels, wind turbines, and energy storage systems—has been gaining traction. GridShare leverages AI technology to remotely manage these decentralized sources, enabling energy optimization and market transactions.
Through this investment, OSS is paving the way for its participation in VPP initiatives, focusing on optimizing decentralized energy control, as well as advancing proof-of-concept studies for market transactions in capacity markets and demand-supply balancing.
2. Omron's Initiatives and Future Prospects
OSS has a long-standing history of providing solutions in energy management, utilizing its expertise in grid interconnection and control technologies. With this new investment, the company is set to embark on several key initiatives:
1. Utilizing group control of energy storage systems to maximize self-consumption and generate value through economic demand response.
2. Engaging in market transactions related to decentralized energy control, focusing on capacity markets and demand-supply balancing.
3. Leveraging the GridShare platform for power generation forecasting and demand analysis to support social infrastructure.
Looking ahead, OSS aims to integrate control technologies with digital advancements to promote the effective use of decentralized energy and maximize the benefits of renewable energy, thus contributing to the development of a sustainable society.
