Cook County Treasures Christmas Traditions with Annual Celebration of Global Holiday Trees

Celebrating Global Holiday Traditions
Each holiday season, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas brings to life the rich tapestry of cultures that comprise the community of Cook County through her annual event, 'Christmas Trees from Around the World.' Now in its 22nd year, this festive exhibit is an emblem of unity and celebration, showcasing the holiday traditions of nearly 100 different nationalities.
The remarkable event will be held at the Treasurer's Office located at 118 N. Clark St., Room 112, in Chicago. It is set to open its doors to the public on November 25, 2025, and will remain accessible until January 5, 2026. Visitors can delight in the enchanting display any weekday, from Monday to Friday. The public is warmly invited to gather and celebrate together amidst beautifully adorned, three-foot trees that are decorated by members of various ethnic and religious communities.
Each tree is not just a decoration but a story waiting to be told, showcasing the unique ornaments and decorations that reflect the exquisite traditions of their respective cultures. From a Christian Nativity scene and an African American Kwanzaa Kinara to a Hindu Prayer Thali and a Jewish Menorah, the diversity of symbols illustrates the common thread of celebration running through different communities. In addition, each tree adds its own charm with ornaments, tinsel, lights, and elements from various cultures including animals, flowers, fruits, flags, and dolls.
Treasurer Pappas emphasized the importance of this celebration, reflecting on her interactions with community members from backgrounds that may lack familiar understandings of tax systems in the U.S.
