In a groundbreaking development for environmental sustainability, Alfa Laval has been chosen by Saipem to provide essential heat transfer technology for one of Europe's most significant carbon capture initiatives. The project, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions, is part of Stockholm Exergi's innovative Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) program, set to commence operations in 2028.

Located in Stockholm, this pioneering facility will capture, liquefy, and permanently store as much as 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year, accounting for roughly one to two percent of the current total global carbon capture capacity. This ambitious venture aligns seamlessly with Sweden's climate neutrality objectives and underscores the European Union's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The BECCS initiative will be implemented at Europe’s largest biomass-based combined heat and power plant, where Stockholm Exergi aims to establish a new paradigm for net-negative emissions. Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval, remarked on the complexities associated with large-scale carbon capture, highlighting the efficiency of energy recovery as a cornerstone for making these projects financially viable: "Stockholm Exergi is setting a new standard for what net-negative emissions can look like at industrial scale, and we are honoured to contribute to this landmark project with our heat transfer solutions."

The implementation of Alfa Laval’s cutting-edge Ziepack heat exchangers will play a vital role in this process. These high-quality components will enable the reclamation of energy used in capturing CO₂ from flue gases, effectively feeding it back into the existing district heating system of Stockholm. This innovative approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also aids in achieving the overall carbon removal targets of the facility. Egil Nybakk, the Director of BECCS at Stockholm Exergi, emphasized this connection, stating that the reclamation of energy is crucial to meeting their environmental goals.

As part of its contract with Saipem, Alfa Laval will supply Ziepack gas-gas interchangers along with several process plate-and-frame heat exchangers.
