Shanghai's Tourism Sector Thrives: Over 9 Million Visitors in 2025
Surge in Tourism in Shanghai for 2025
Shanghai has emerged as a key global tourism hub, experiencing a significant rebound in inbound travel for 2025. With 9.36 million visitors welcomed throughout the year, the city's tourism landscape reflects a remarkable recovery and resurgence of interest among international travelers.
According to the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, the total inbound arrivals saw a substantial increase of 39.58% from the previous year. This remarkable growth was particularly notable during December, when the city recorded 1.08 million inbound visits, a 45.56% increase over the same month in 2024.
One of the contributing factors to this revival in tourism was the strong demand for overnight stays, which accounted for most of the inbound travel. December saw 1.04 million overnight visitors, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 47.72%. Of the total annual arrivals, 8.79 million were overnight stays, marking a 45.09% growth overall. This influx signifies Shanghai’s sustained appeal as a premier urban destination in Asia.
A notable rise in visitors from key markets greatly contributed to this surge. South Korean travelers more than doubled their numbers with 909,100 arrivals, marking a 103.62% increase. Russian tourists also showed a remarkable increase, with December figures soaring by 93.58% to reach an annual total of 385,100. Visitors from Thailand, Indonesia, and Italy also contributed to the influx, with increases of 70.16%, 62.13%, and 52.43%, respectively. Traditional markets like Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia demonstrated consistent growth of over 30%, showcasing a balanced and diversified mix of inbound travelers across both regional and long-haul markets.
Additionally, inbound tourism services experienced expansions, with travel agencies playing a central role in driving this growth. Travel agencies organized 180,500 inbound visits in 2025, a staggering increase of 97.39% year-over-year, further underlining the improving service capacity within the sector.
Strong Demand in Accommodation Sector
The accommodation sector also witnessed a robust surge in demand, driven by favorable visa policies and Shanghai’s appealing urban landscape. Boutique hotels experienced remarkable performances, with international travelers constituting 66% of guests at establishments such as the Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. Notably, foreign guests represented 20% of the clientele at the Broadway Mansions Hotel, which is famous for its breathtaking views of the Bund and Huangpu River.
Performance metrics across Shanghai’s accommodation market indicate a flourishing state, particularly in the high-end segment. Five-star hotels achieved impressive occupancy rates of 70.71% in December, which noted a 4.45 percentage points increase from the previous year. The average daily room rates also rose, reaching RMB 1,045.32, a 9.29% increase year-on-year, while the annual average stood at RMB 978.80.
This booming hospitality scene suggests that Shanghai is on the precipice of further growth, with emerging high-end travel experiences poised to increase its appeal to international tourists. As Shanghai continues to navigate the evolving global travel landscape, the city's dynamic tourism market represents a promising avenue for future exploration and investment. With ongoing developments and an ever-improving visitor experience, Shanghai is set to remain a pivotal destination for global travelers in the years to come.
