Experience Biodiversity at Hinuma's Nature Observation Event This Summer

Discover Biodiversity at Hinuma Wetland

On July 26, 2025, from 10 AM to 12 PM, the Palsystem Ibaraki Tochigi, under the leadership of Chairperson Aoki Yoshiyo, will host an exciting nature observation event at Hinuma Nature Park in Ibaraki Town. This initiative invites approximately 50 families and staff members to explore and observe a variety of creatures in the Ramsar-designated wetlands. This event promises participants the invaluable opportunity to connect with nature and understand the importance of preserving our environment.

A Treasure Trove of Natural Wonders

Hinuma, known for its unique ecosystem where saltwater and freshwater mix, is home to many rare species. Visitors can expect to encounter a rich array of wildlife, including the Ibaraki Town's designated natural monument, the Hinumaite dragonfly, as well as Japanese eels, black-beaked crab, and Tokyo dwarf frogs, among numerous others. This annual observation event garners interest from participants across all age groups, fostering a shared understanding of the ecological diversity present in the area.

Last year's observation event uncovered nearly 20 different species, ranging from endangered native species to invasive ones. The site is also a haven for waterbirds, which flock to the lush ecosystems. This thriving habitat sets the stage for winter birdwatching initiatives, enriching the experience for nature enthusiasts.

Committed to Conservation

In 2015, Hinuma was officially registered as an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention, which emphasizes the need for regional cooperation in environmental conservation and sustainable resource use. The observation events, held twice a year, aim to educate participants about the ecosystem's richness and emphasize the importance of passing on such natural heritage to future generations.
