Aburaya Ryokan Unveils Special Gallery for 114th Anniversary Celebration

Aburaya Ryokan: A Tribute to 114 Years of History

The Aburaya Ryokan, located in the picturesque area of Akiruno City, Tokyo, is set to celebrate its 114th anniversary in a unique manner. To mark this special milestone, the hotel will launch a gallery showcasing historical photographs from its rich 114-year history. This exclusive exhibition will be accessible only to guests who stay at the ryokan, making it a must-see for those who appreciate history and culture. The event aligns perfectly with the 21st event of Yoruiti, scheduled for August 29, 2026.

Gallery Details

The gallery opening on August 29 will be a one-month special event where guests can explore an array of images that capture the essence of Aburaya Ryokan from its inception in 1912 to the present day. The photographs include not only snapshots of the ryokan through the years but also features images with various television personalities who have visited the establishment. This blend of visual history aims to provide guests with a nostalgic connection to the past while staying in a tradition-rich environment.

Yoruiti Festival

This year’s gallery coincides with the well-known Yoruiti festival, a summer tradition in the region that attracts around 30,000 visitors each year. Initiated in 2003, the festival has become a vibrant celebration of local culture, capturing the warmth and nostalgia of the past. Guests can experience the lively atmosphere as the streets along the road adorned in red cloth lights, human-powered rickshaws, and traditional performances create an unforgettable experience reminiscent of bygone days. A local fireworks display and various food stalls are additional highlights of this cherished event.

As the chairperson of the Yoruiti executive committee, Aburaya Ryokan’s head, Mitsuo Numata, has dedicated himself to elevating the festival's essence and enhancing community engagement. He hopes guests will not only relish the festivities but also feel a deep connection with the rich history of Akiruno through the gallery during their stay.

Recent Renovations and Future Plans

In July 2026, Aburaya Ryokan underwent significant renovations, updating both the interior and exterior, and launching a completely renewed official website. The gallery initiative is part of the ryokan’s ongoing efforts to celebrate its legacy and prepare for its 115th anniversary next year.

Mitsuo Numata expressed his sentiment towards preserving the ryokan’s legacy, noting, "While organizing 114 years' worth of photographs, I realized that our history is intertwined with the stories of everyone who has visited and supported us. I hope that guests can take a moment to appreciate the history of Akiruno while staying with us this year."

In anticipation of the Yoruiti festival, Aburaya Ryokan has crafted the gallery exhibition to bridge the past and the present, allowing guests to walk through the corridors of history. When visitors stroll through the ryokan, they’re not just experiencing accommodation; they’re engaging with a living narrative deeply rooted in the community.

This initiative beautifully sums up 114 years of hospitality, and the gallery continues Aburaya Ryokan's tradition of welcoming guests with warmth, rich heritage, and local culture.
