Greater Montreal Welcomes Second Airport with New Terminal on June 15, 2026

Greater Montreal's New Airport Opens June 15, 2026

In a significant development for Greater Montreal, YHU Infrastructure Partners and the MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport have announced the upcoming inauguration of a new terminal set to open on June 15, 2026. This new terminal, dedicated to improving air travel experiences, will usher in commercial flight operations at MET, greatly benefiting the region's passengers. With a vision of efficiency and user-friendliness, this facility is poised to stand out in the competitive landscape of air travel.

A New Era of Air Travel

The new terminal will start operations with Porter Airlines and Pascan Aviation facilitating flights that connect various Canadian cities across the country. Not only will this terminal service existing airlines, but it is also designed to accommodate additional carriers in the future, thereby expanding flight options for passengers.

As major urban areas globally rely on multiple airports to meet air travel demands, Montreal joins the ranks with its new MET terminal. This strategic addition aims to cater to the air travel needs of both residents and tourists, offering direct flights operated by quieter, more fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft. Yanic Roy, President and CEO of MET, stated, “The opening of the terminal at MET will offer more options for travellers and allow airlines to take advantage of greater airport capacity in the metropolitan region.”

Redefining the Airport Experience

Designed and operated by YHU Infrastructure Partners, the terminal showcases a fresh take on the airport landscape, emphasizing efficiency, comfort, and simplicity. Spanning 21,000 square meters, the terminal will feature nine boarding bridges and a waiting lounge replete with 900 seats. The integrated operational model ensures seamless coordination, enabling quick responses to passenger needs. The compactness of the terminal means passengers can arrive shortly before boarding and navigate through the facility with ease.

Charles Roberge, President and CEO of YHU Terminal, proclaimed, “We are not simply building an airport terminal; we're redefining the way people travel in Montreal.” He underscored that this project stemmed from intense collaboration with MET, with attention paid to creating a holistic and human-centered travel experience.

Architectural features of the terminal draw inspiration from the historic R-100 airship visit in 1930, one of the remarkable events in Montreal’s transport history. The design maximizes natural light, creating a welcoming atmosphere while paying homage to the region's aviation past. As Canada’s oldest airport, opened in 1927, the MET site transitioned from serving as Montreal's primary airport in 1940 to a facility now ready for contemporary travel needs.

Convenient Accessibility

Situated just 15 kilometers from downtown Montreal, the MET is conveniently reachable via an extensive road network and the METbus express shuttle, linking the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station directly to the airport terminal. The terminal includes an efficient drop-off zone and dedicated traffic lanes to facilitate smooth vehicle flow, ensuring a hassle-free experience for travelers—especially for over three million Quebec residents living in Montreal, Montérégie, and the Eastern Townships (Estrie).

The terminal will house a range of retail options, all sourced from local businesses in Quebec, including a Bâton Rouge restaurant and a Café Dépôt, enriching the passenger experience with local flavor and convenience.

Community Involvement and Support

Finally, the development of the MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport has resulted from extensive community consultations, involving local elected officials, the aerospace sector, tourism industry players, and community representatives. This collaborative approach has fostered a high level of public acceptance, with a 2024 Léger survey indicating that 77% of citizens support the new terminal's opening.

In summary, the launch of the new airport terminal in Greater Montreal on June 15, 2026, signifies a grand step forward for the region. With improved access, greater flight options, and a commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience, the MET terminal is poised to become a key player in Montreal’s aviation landscape.
