EDF and Kraken Team Up for Energy Efficiency
On November 17, 2025, UK energy giant EDF announced its latest partnership with Kraken, a London-based technology company. This collaboration aims to revolutionize how households manage their energy consumption, potentially leading to savings of several hundred pounds a year on electricity bills. By harnessing Kraken's AI-driven operating system, EDF will enable automatic control of home devices such as electric vehicles (EVs), battery storage, heat pumps, and solar panels. This means that these devices can operate during the hours when electricity is most affordable and environmentally friendly, efficiently aligning cost reduction with decarbonization efforts.
A Bold Move Towards Energy Savings
Currently, about 1,000 devices have already been connected to Kraken's platform, representing a total flexible power capacity of 7 MW, sufficient to supply approximately 10,000 households. The decentralization of energy resources not only helps in efficient electricity management but also contributes significantly to reducing the carbon footprint.
Through this alliance, EDF will utilize Kraken’s flexibility platform to optimize its existing customer service capabilities and the management of its generation and storage portfolios. This is particularly beneficial for EV users, who can save several hundred pounds annually compared to standard home charging setups while also aiding in stabilizing the electricity grid.
The Kraken platform is already managing over 2 GW of decentralized energy resources, forming one of the largest Virtual Power Plants (VPP) globally. These advancements contribute to improving the efficiency of the entire power system and promoting decarbonization.
A Partnership That Delivers Results
EDF transitioned its customer systems to Kraken in 2020. In just two years, they successfully integrated over 17 million data points from 17 legacy systems. This upgrade has significantly improved customer satisfaction and employee engagement, with Trustpilot ratings soaring to 4.8. Now, Kraken serves over 70 energy companies worldwide, managing accounts for over 70 million customers. Additionally, both companies are founding members of the Mercury Consortium, which aims for international standardization in smart energy.
Voices from the Leaders
Richard Hughes, Director of EDF Energy Retail, stated, “With our new partnership with Kraken, we can bring smarter, low-carbon living to households across the UK more easily. Combining EDF's energy expertise with Kraken's cutting-edge technology will make flexibility translate into actual savings, accelerating our transition to a net-zero society.”
Devrim Celal, Chief Flexibility & Marketing Officer for Kraken, expressed enthusiasm about extending their long-standing cooperation with EDF into new realms, stating, “This collaboration marks a significant step toward transforming the energy future through technology.”
