Yachiyo Engineering and Mikata Yoshi Foundation Collaborate for Sustainable Financing Initiatives
Collaboration for Sustainable Watershed Management
Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd., headquartered in Taito, Tokyo, and the Mikata Yoshi Foundation, based in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture, have announced a new partnership aimed at enhancing sustainable funding mechanisms for watershed-scale environmental management. This collaboration merges Yachiyo Engineering's extensive expertise in natural capital evaluation and watershed management with the Mikata Yoshi Foundation's grassroots experience in community-based funding systems.
The Need for Integrated Solutions
As human interactions with forests, hills, rivers, and lakes continue to diminish, regional natural capital and biodiversity are quietly eroding, along with the livelihoods and cultures that depend on them. These issues are interconnected and manifest as a weakening of the relationships across ecosystems, economies, cultures, and institutions. Addressing such challenges requires a shift from isolated help for individual issues to a more comprehensive view of the watershed as a unit. This includes developing continuous support mechanisms for funding, assistance, and evaluation.
Unfortunately, current structures to connect small local practices to sustainable funding flows are still lacking. Established in 2017 with contributions from 772 local citizens, the Mikata Yoshi Foundation operates as a community foundation that designs and implements diverse funding channels tailored to local realities. These include contributions and grants, a locality-specific Social Impact Bond (SIB), collaborative financing with local credit unions, and the use of dormant deposits.
Innovative Approaches to Community Support
Beyond financial aid, the Mikata Yoshi Foundation focuses on building initiatives through dialogue with the community and supports their development with an eye on tangible outcomes. This unique approach has allowed it to make significant contributions to public welfare in the region.
Yachiyo Engineering has a long history, spanning over 60 years, in environmental assessment and watershed management. They actively address social issues and have recently committed to fostering nature-positive initiatives. The Mikata Yoshi Foundation has been instrumental in investigating local challenges, providing consultations and grants, and facilitating community engagement in Higashiomi.
Now, both organizations are poised to leverage their respective strengths to cultivate an ecosystem that nurtures local resources and develops sustainable funding structures. This initiative aims to create a circular economy where
