Tokyo's Heat Countermeasures Contest Awards Innovative Products Amid Climate Change Challenges

Tokyo's Heat Countermeasures Contest

In recent years, the threat of heat-related illnesses has escalated due to climate change, making it vital to devise efficient heat countermeasures. This year, Tokyo has launched the Tokyo Cool Biz initiative, which promotes a smart balance between energy conservation and comfortable living. The key themes are based on three environments: the working environment, living environment, and dressing environment. This forward-thinking approach has sparked the Tokyo Heat Countermeasures Contest, aiming to encourage a shift towards heat-adaptive lifestyles.

The contest invited businesses to submit a variety of products designed to combat heat. After thorough first-round evaluations conducted by a team of experts, a shortlist of 12 products was identified across four categories:
1. Shade Creation
2. Hydration and Electrolyte Supplementation
3. Cooling and Temperature Regulation
4. Measurement and Monitoring

Between May 1st and May 10th, 2023, citizens of Tokyo participated in voting through mobile apps and other platforms, with a staggering total of 29,250 votes cast. The winners in each category were determined with excitement and anticipation. Each winner was awarded titles such as Grand Prix, Innovation Award, and Usability Award, signifying the impactful contributions these products make to enhance the quality of life during extreme heat.
