Historic Contract Ratified by Drain-Pro Workers Alongside Teamsters Union Representation

A New Era for Drain-Pro Employees

On November 26, 2024, history was made in Puyallup, Washington, as a group of 56 Drain-Pro employees confirmed their commitment to better working conditions by ratifying their inaugural contract with Teamsters Local 313. This marks the first time these technicians, drivers, mechanics, and support staff have united under the Teamsters union banner, opening the door to various benefits and rights traditionally secured through collective bargaining.

The decision to unionize stemmed from firsthand insights into the advantages enjoyed by worker counterparts in other industries. Matt Richardson, a dedicated Drain-Pro technician, expressed the sentiments shared by many employees, stating, "We wanted to unionize because we have seen the benefits other workers have gotten through Teamsters representation. We are already reaping the rewards of being part of this incredible union." His words echo the ambition and hope that fueled the unionization effort.

The newly negotiated three-year contract includes a spectrum of benefits designed to enhance the welfare of the employees. Among these are guaranteed annual raises that promise to improve the financial stability of the workers, upgraded health care coverage aimed at ensuring better access to medical services, and inclusion in the Teamsters pension plan, which is projected to help employees save for retirement more effectively.

In the words of Nick Lansdale, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 313, “These workers keep Drain-Pro running. We are thrilled to have helped them secure such a lucrative contract.” His statement underlines the crucial role these employees play in the company's operations and the importance of acknowledging their hard work through fair labor practices.

Drain-Pro is known for a wide array of solid waste services, ranging from septic pumping to excavation and drain cleaning. Chuck Stiles, Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, highlighted the quality of service provided by Drain-Pro staff, noting, “Drain-Pro workers provide industry-leading service, so it's only right they have secured an industry-leading contract.” His recognition of the employees’ commitment reflects a broader understanding of the nexus between competitive labor standards and service excellence in the industry.

For over 120 years, Teamsters Local 313 has stood as a pillar of support for workers in various sectors across the Pacific Northwest, advocating for workers' rights and fair compensation. The landmark achievement of these Drain-Pro employees is a testament to the enduring power of collective action, illustrating how union representation can foster a sense of community among workers fighting for equitable treatment.

Ultimately, the ratification of this contract signifies a pivotal step toward improved labor conditions for Drain-Pro employees. As they navigate this new chapter, the hope is that their journey inspires other workers to explore unionization as a means to secure better rights and protections in their workplaces.
