Expanding Access to Eye Care in Northeast India
In a groundbreaking initiative, HelpMeSee, in partnership with HMS Vision Private Limited and the Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSDN), has completed a significant cataract surgical training program in Guwahati. This operation, which ran from April to August 2026, aimed to bring much-needed surgical training closer to ophthalmologists within the region, successfully providing training to 51 participants instead of the original goal of just 30. The training focused on the Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) technique, a safe, quick, and cost-effective method vital for restoring sight to individuals suffering from cataracts.
The program's primary objective was to improve accessibility by eliminating the need for ophthalmologists to travel long distances for training. By transporting two HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulators from Mumbai to Guwahati, the initiative provided a localized training environment for doctors working in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Tripura. The result was a comprehensive training experience that developed essential surgical skills and enhanced confidence among the trainees.
Hands-On Training and Immediate Impact
Throughout the training, participants received direct guidance from skilled instructors at HMS Vision Private Limited. This hands-on approach allowed them to practice and refine their surgical techniques in a structured simulation environment, contributing to a more effective learning process. Doctors from various institutions attended the program, with 26 from SSDN and 25 from other organizations, indicating a strong collaborative effort in elevating the region's surgical capabilities.
Dr. Akshay Nair from HMS Vision stressed the importance of localized training, stating, "This operation demonstrates what can happen when we bring training closer to ophthalmologists rather than asking them to travel thousands of kilometers to access it." The immediate success achieved in Guwahati may serve as a model for similar training programs in other underserved regions.
Feedback and Progress Post-Training
After completing the course, early follow-up assessments indicated that several participants had already begun performing independent surgeries. Specifically, 12 graduates progressed to conducting surgeries on their own, while an additional 17 have started assisting in surgical procedures. This early success illustrates how such training programs have the potential to translate into improved clinical practice and ultimately better outcomes for countless patients in need.
Dr. Kasturi Bhattacharjee, Director of Clinical and Academics at SSDN, echoed positive sentiments, noting that participants appreciated the opportunity to engage in a hands-on learning experience in a supportive environment. The program was designed to bolster surgical skills, ultimately benefiting both individual medical practitioners and the broader community.
A Flexible Model for Future Training Operations
The Guwahati operation exemplifies a flexible model for surgical training deployment. By utilizing existing facilities at SSDN, HelpMeSee was able to dramatically cut travel requirements and logistical complications typically associated with establishing a permanent training center. This adaptability is invaluable in addressing the challenges facing eye care in remote and underserved areas.
HelpMeSee believes that by effectively utilizing simulation technology and strategic partnerships, it can continue delivering impactful training programs across India. As the organization expands its reach, the focus remains on equipping more cataract specialists with the skills necessary to restore sight in their communities. The goal is clear—eradicate preventable blindness caused by cataracts through increased training and access to effective surgical techniques.
