Exploring AI and Digital Twin Technologies in 6G Networks: A Joint Study by DOCOMO and VIAVI
AI-Driven Network Control for 6G by DOCOMO and VIAVI
In an exciting development for the future of mobile communication, NTT DOCOMO INC. and VIAVI Solutions Inc. have successfully conducted a joint study that highlights the potential of AI-driven network control in 6G mobile communications. This pioneering research was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, taking place from March 2-5, 2026.
The demonstration focused on AI-driven radio access network (RAN) control, showcasing a notable advancement in the performance and efficiency of next-generation mobile networks. Traditional beamforming processes in telecommunications require detailed reporting from user equipment (UE) to assess network quality. However, with the innovative approach taken in this study, DOCOMO has leveraged its Self-awareness Network concept alongside VIAVI's cutting-edge digital twin technology and TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator (RSG) network simulator. This collaboration resulted in a significant reduction of control overhead, which ultimately improved system throughput by an impressive 20%.
Utilizing a simulated environment modeling multiple base stations around the iconic Tokyo Station area, the study proved that sophisticated AI models could predict network quality effectively. Each base station was able to determine which transmission beam to select for individual UEs from a pool of eight candidate beams—this was done while minimizing the need for extensive quality measurements and reports from user devices.
Ian Langley, Senior Vice President of VIAVI's Wireless Business Unit, remarked, "This demonstration shows that the Self-awareness Network concept significantly reduces the need for conventional network quality measurements and UE reporting. The intelligent use of digital twins and AI-powered simulations based on reliable data allows for highly efficient network control."
Hiroyuki Oto, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the 6G-Tech Department at DOCOMO, echoed this sentiment. He stated that the incorporation of AI and digital twin technologies is not limited to telecommunications but is set to transform various industries. The AI-driven capabilities for network control are anticipated to greatly enhance the functionality and usability of future 6G technologies.
DOCOMO's Self-awareness Network aims to revolutionize how network performance and resource allocation are managed across diverse radio environments. By assessing network quality within a digital twin framework, the system can dynamically evaluate factors such as radio propagation characteristics and location information, thus ensuring optimal network control and resource allocation for improved overall efficiency.
As both companies continue to study and develop technologies related to 6G mobile communications, their exploration of AI and digital twins will play a crucial role in shaping the future of telecommunications.
VIAVI Solutions, recognized as a global leader in testing, measurement, and optical technologies, brings expertise that has secured critical infrastructures across various sectors, including military and aerospace. With advanced solutions in place for numerous applications ranging from data center operations to consumer electronics, VIAVI continues to contribute meaningful advancements in network technology.
In conclusion, the collaborative efforts between DOCOMO and VIAVI mark a significant step toward achieving the full spectrum of 6G capabilities, providing insights into how AI can optimize and reshape the telecommunications landscape. The research reflects a commitment to innovation that promises not only improved network performance but also an enhanced user experience in the world of mobile communications.
