Enoshima Lantern Festival 2025: A Fantastic Illumination Spectacle
The Enoshima Lantern Festival 2025 is set to transform the picturesque island of Enoshima, located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, starting July 19, 2025. Under the theme of 'designing air', the festival will incorporate a stunning light installation known as the 'Light Picture Scroll', created by VELVETA DESIGN, a prominent design studio based in Suginami, Tokyo, led by CEO Shigeki Hirayama. This event is proudly sponsored by the Shonan Fujisawa Activation Consortium and has been recognized as part of Japan's Night View Heritage.
The festival will showcase an extraordinary light installation that weaves together traditional Ukiyo-e art with modern visual presentations. The installation will illuminate the pathways from the Zuishin Gate of Enoshima Shrine, through the stone steps, to the Hetsumiya Shrine, creating a magical ambiance that is further enhanced by the newly expanded exhibition area at the Samuel Cocking Garden.
This year's festival is structured into two phases: the first phase will run from July 19 until the end of the event, offering light motifs that evoke cool summer breezes with accompanying ambient sounds. A new highlight this year is the 'Summer Night Moon', representing the unchanging light that has guided visitors throughout the ages. The dazzling display aims to delight festival-goers with its vibrant themes.
Commencing on July 27, the second phase will elevate the experience as visitors ascend the illuminated stone steps symbolizing 'Guidance of Light' towards Hetsumiya Shrine. Here, traditional wind chimes crafted from seashells will emit soothing sounds beneath the awning, while flowy fabrics showcase enchanting Ukiyo-e artworks depicting the island’s heritage. This immersive environment aims to reflect the rich cultural legacy that has flourished on Enoshima.
Moreover, this year's festival will expand its reach into the Samuel Cocking Garden, situated at the summit of Enoshima. This section will present massive lanterns illuminated by a spectrum of colors, adding to the festival's enchanting atmosphere. Festival attendees will also be invited to stroll down to the Sea Candle as part of their evening delights, experiencing a myriad of twinkling lights amidst nature.
