Seira Solar Joins Tokyo Bay eSG Project: Pioneering Sustainable Urban Agriculture

Seira Solar Joins Tokyo Bay eSG Project

Seira Solar, a group company of Seira Holdings, has announced its participation in the Tokyo Bay eSG Project’s early-stage initiative titled "Microbial Library x Vertical Agriculture Circular Agriculture Realization" for the fiscal years 2024 to 2026. This pioneering project aims to reduce environmental impact and ensure stable food supply in urban areas through innovative agricultural practices.

What is Circular Agriculture?

The Circular Agriculture initiative focuses on achieving sustainable food production without soil, utilizing hydroponics and vertical farming techniques. By integrating microbial applications, silica soil derived from recycled glass, and renewable energy systems, the project aspires to create sustainable agricultural practices in various urban locations. Seira Solar’s expertise in renewable energy technology and energy management will be instrumental in supporting energy autonomy for this facility, incorporating solar power, battery storage, and wind energy to supply electricity and maintain optimal cultivation environments via remote monitoring.

Key Demonstration Aspects:

  • - High-yield organic production utilizing microbes and organic fertilizers.
  • - Resource recycling established by using silica soil derived from recycled glass.
  • - Autonomous cultivation supported by rainwater, renewable energy, and battery systems.
  • - Building a community network to support employment for people with disabilities.

Five Pillars Supporting Circular Agriculture

1. Water Recycling: Utilizing rainwater for hydroponic cultivation.
2. Microbial Symbiosis: Employing DSE (platform microorganisms) for efficient production.
3. Resource Recycling: Using silica soil created from waste glass to promote sustainability.
4. Renewable Energy: Powering the facility through isolated renewable energy generation combined with battery storage.
5. Agriculture and Social Welfare Cooperation: Supporting seeding, harvesting, and shipping processes in collaboration with people with disabilities.

Seira Solar’s Contribution:

Seira Solar’s role includes the design and installation of solar panels and battery systems for agricultural facilities, establishing a circular energy facility linked with wind power and rainwater collection, and developing IoT-based remote monitoring systems. The company also focuses on educational and awareness initiatives to visualize the use of renewable energy effectively.

Through these efforts, Seira Solar aims to foster a new well-being society by integrating renewable energy with urban agriculture, contributing to a sustainable future where humans and the environment coexist harmoniously.

Additional Project Partners

1. Landbrain Co., Ltd. (Lead Company): Overall project management.
2. Endophyte Co., Ltd. (Startup): Development and verification of microbial materials.
3. Planet Co., Ltd.: Verification of hydroponic cultivation methods.
4. Act Silica Co., Ltd.: Validation of circular systems.
5. Urban Agriculture and Welfare Promotion Association: Management support through agricultural and welfare cooperation.

Innovative Infrastructure

The cultivation facility features solar panels mounted on both the upper and lower sections, generating power during the day while operating pumps and sensors for water circulation. This energy is stored in batteries for usage during colder temperatures or nighttime. The design ensures that optimal temperature environments for plant growth are maintained consistently.

The solar panels, angled toward the center, effectively collect rainwater for plant growth. Water circulates slowly from the top, absorbing oxygen and cascading down, only to be drawn back up by pumps, creating a continuous loop. The energy harvested from the solar panels powers the facility’s equipment, ensuring an efficient and sustainable operation.

Conclusion

Launched as part of the Tokyo Bay eSG Project, this initiative illustrates a commitment towards realizing a harmonious blend of nature and convenience in urban living. The project encourages the implementation of cutting-edge technology while promoting sustainability in food production.
