Theatre Power: Bringing Interactive English Theatre to Japan
The Theatre Power initiative, operated by Talanton Co., Ltd. based in Setagaya, Tokyo, has commenced reservations for its 2026 fall tour, scheduled from early October to mid-November. This program aims to enhance English learning through interactive theatre featuring professional actors from abroad, targeting a wide array of educational institutions including kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools, and universities.
In the previous year, the program was a tremendous success, with around 140 kindergarten children from six locations in the Greater Tokyo Area participating in the English play event organized by Kids International. This year, the initiative is expanding its reach, accepting inquiries from educational institutions across Japan that wish to incorporate English drama into their curriculums.
Why Focus on Theatre Education?
In many Western countries, theatre is recognized as a crucial educational tool, rather than merely entertainment. For example, the UK’s National Curriculum mandates that all children have the opportunity to engage in drama to enhance their spoken language skills. This methodology, which fosters self-expression, is now gaining traction in several Asian regions, including Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan, in the context of learning English as a foreign language.
However, in Japan, there is still a gap in linking theatre and education, with the concept not yet fully recognized. The skills acquired through participating in drama—from expressing oneself physically to experiencing joy in sharing emotions—are seldom covered in traditional textbooks. Theatre Power aims to deliver these transformative experiences to children learning English in Japan, a goal that has been the foundation of the initiative since its inception.
Engaging Theatre Experience
The performances of Theatre Power are radically different from traditional theatre; they prioritize audience participation. Children get actively involved in activities such as tug-of-war games, and they can help characters on stage. This interactive approach compels children to engage in English cheerfully, fostering a sense of camaraderie among diverse audiences, regardless of their backgrounds or levels of English proficiency.
The recent event held by Kids International demonstrated the participants' enthusiasm. On the day of the performance of “How the Elephant Got Its Nose?” by Rudyard Kipling, 140 children from six kindergartens gathered at the Ebihara Community Center in Shinagawa. It was their first experience with theatre, and they entered the hall with eager anticipation.

More Than Just Watching: Children Take Center Stage
Unlike typical performances where audiences merely watch, Theatre Power focuses on making children the stars of the show. Participants enthusiastically engage with the actors, encouraging them to interact. This unique dynamic was highlighted by Maya Izawa from Kids International, who observed that the children were thrilled to communicate with the actors and relive the drama long after the event.
Moreover, following the standard Q&A session typical in international performances, participants also got to ask their actors questions, further enhancing their engagement.
A Message from Seiko Maeda, CEO of Talanton Co., Ltd.
Seiko Maeda remarked, “Through our interactions with children, it's evident that theatre holds special educational power. Experiences that move the heart cannot be replicated with textbooks alone—children naturally develop their expressiveness and communication skills through these impactful experiences. After last year's performances, I've reinforced my belief in the significant role theatre can play. In a world that demands equal opportunities for all children regardless of country or language, I am committed to delivering these experiences to as many educational settings as possible.”
