The Fascinating Second Chapter of Legendary Jockey Masayoshi Ebina

A New Chapter for Masayoshi Ebina: A Legend in Horse Racing

Masayoshi Ebina, a name synonymous with success in Japanese horse racing, is not just known for his incredible record of 2,541 wins but also for his inspiring story transitioning from jockey to horse trainer. On November 21, 2025, he will be sharing his experiences and insights at a talk event hosted by Asahi Culture Center in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Joined by former Asahi Shimbun reporter Masanori Ariyoshi, the event promises to be a captivating exploration of the world of horse racing.

The Journey of a Champion

Masayoshi Ebina was born on March 19, 1969, in Hokkaido, Japan. He began his illustrious career as a jockey in March 1987, and by 1996, he clinched his first G1 title at the Tenno Sho (Autumn) while riding the legendary Bubble Gum Fellow. Ebina reached the peak of his career in 2001 when he became the first-ever JRA leading jockey, marking a historic year with an astonishing 133 wins. His remarkable journey includes competing in the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe four times and finishing second twice—an unparalleled achievement for a Japanese jockey.

In 2010, he made history again by leading Apapane to victory in the fillies' triple crown. Until his retirement in February 2021, Ebina secured his legacy with 2,541 wins and 129 graded stakes victories, including 26 G1 titles. Yet, despite his monumental success, he was not satisfied with the status quo; he sought a new challenge in the world of horse training.

A New Beginning in Training

Achieving a trainer’s license in 2020 from a notoriously challenging examination with a pass rate of only 5.2% showcases Ebina’s commitment to his new career. While he has put aside the reins of a jockey, his passion for horse racing remains strong as he now trains horses, focusing on nurturing the next generation of racers.

During the upcoming event, Ebina will reflect on his days as a jockey, sharing memorable races, his experiences abroad, and the emotional tales of victories and defeats. He will also delve into the challenges he faces as a trainer and the newfound excitement that comes with this role. It’s an opportunity for attendees to witness a unique blend of nostalgia and hope for the future of horse racing in Japan.
