Chula Vista Student's Journey to Dentistry
Isabella Troncoso Medrano has always been captivated by the world of dentistry. Her journey began in Mexico, where she spent countless hours in her aunt's dental office. It was a formative experience that ignited her dream to become a dentist. Upon moving to the United States at the age of 16, Isabella made it her mission to obtain the education necessary to achieve her dream, leading her to pursue studies in the healthcare field.
Currently, Isabella is double-majoring: she is not only a biology student at a university in the San Diego area but also enrolled in the Dental Assistant program at UEI College's Chula Vista campus. "I realized that if I wanted to save up for dental school, I needed to gain relevant experience," she explained. Unlike many of her peers who worked in unrelated fields, Isabella sought to immerse herself in an environment that resonated with her lifelong aspirations.
Recently, Isabella's hard work and dedication have been recognized on a national level with the awarding of the Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assistant Scholarship from the PDS Health Foundation. This scholarship offers both financial assistance and mentorship, presenting Isabella with an invaluable opportunity to bolster her knowledge and skills. To date, the foundation has supported over 400 students, disbursing more than $1.9 million in scholarships, a testament to their commitment to improving access to dental care.
Isabella expressed her enthusiasm about the scholarship, saying, "It combines everything I'm passionate about: biology, problem-solving, and creativity." The Dental Assistant program at UEI College is designed to be flexible, allowing students to balance academic coursework with practical training, reflective of real-life scenarios in the dental field.
As part of her education, Isabella engages in hands-on lab sessions, mastering key techniques that dental professionals employ daily. In her words, these sessions are much more than theory; they offer a window into the realities of patient care and dentistry. Her instructor, Angelica Ivey, plays a significant role in this experience by sharing stories from her professional journey, providing real-world insights that enhance the learning experience. Isabella shares that, "Angelica's support and her field experiences make the lessons much more tangible and relatable."
This scholarship alleviates significant financial concerns for Isabella, easing her transition into dental school after completing her current programs. Carli Casey from the PDS Health Foundation emphasized the importance of such scholarships, stating, "Investing in driven students like Isabella is crucial. It’s more than just education funding; it’s about enhancing access to healthcare."
For Isabella, receiving this recognition validates her hard work and reaffirms her belief that she is on the right path. "At times, I question whether all my effort is worthwhile," she admits. However, she finds motivation when others acknowledge her dedication and offer their support.
