Marvell's LiquidSecurity Technology Integrated with Microsoft Azure Cloud HSM

Marvell LiquidSecurity Selected for Microsoft Azure Cloud HSM

In a significant development for cloud security, Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL), recognized for its innovative semiconductor solutions, has been chosen by Microsoft to integrate its LiquidSecurity family of hardware security modules (HSMs) into the Microsoft Azure Cloud HSM service. This partnership furthers the collaboration between the two companies, enhancing Azure's capabilities in providing secure key management solutions.

The Marvell LiquidSecurity HSMs are already in use within the Microsoft Azure Key Vault and its Managed HSM services. By adding Azure Cloud HSM to the mix, Marvell aims to offer a dedicated cloud-based environment where customers can execute cryptographic operations and manage security keys securely. The Azure Cloud HSM service is designed to deliver a high-availability experience in a single-tenant structure, providing users with full control over their cryptographic resources, while maintaining compliance and security through its FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification. This certification ensures robust security standards are met and provides customers peace of mind as they manage sensitive data.

As the demand for HSM-as-a-service solutions rises—projected to grow at an annual rate of 8.5% until 2029—Marvell is well-positioned to meet the needs of a market increasingly focused on secure cloud infrastructure. Will Chu, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Marvell, remarked on the extended collaboration's potential to revolutionize the HSM market, stating, "Together, we share a vision to modernize the HSM market and enable Azure customers to leverage the latest security standards for the most demanding cloud-scale applications."

This partnership addresses a common challenge faced by many Azure customers: the need for administrative control over their HSMs without incurring the operational overhead that typically accompanies high-availability systems. Microsoft’s vice president of Cloud Security Engineering, Soumya Subramanian, emphasized this point, stating that through their collaboration, customers can utilize the most secure and compliant key management services available.

Michela Menting, Senior Research Director at ABI Research, highlighted the importance of Marvell's leadership in the cloud-optimized HSM category. With the rising demand for confidential computing and cloud sovereignty, service providers require advanced infrastructure to support these initiatives. Marvell has consistently demonstrated its expertise in offering optimized HSM solutions that meet customers' evolving needs.

Historically, HSMs have been available as traditional server appliances, often cumbersome and management-intensive for users in their data centers. In contrast, Marvell LiquidSecurity HSMs are designed as PCIe-based devices specifically tailored for dense multi-tenant environments. A single LiquidSecurity2 card has the remarkable ability to manage over 100,000 encryption keys while processing more than one million operations per second. This efficiency means providers can deliver HSM services using significantly less power, space, and hardware compared to conventional systems.

Transitioning to a cloud model for HSMs simplifies operations for businesses looking to secure sensitive transactions, like healthcare data management. By adopting this cloud-based model, organizations can bypass the complexities associated with traditional hardware management and easily subscribe to HSM services, thus streamlining their security processes for a variety of applications.

Marvell's designation as a trusted partner by leading tech giants marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of cloud security solutions. As they continue to push boundaries in semiconductor technology, their focus remains on delivering products that not only meet current customer demands but also anticipate future technological advancements.

Overall, Marvell’s partnership with Microsoft Azure signifies an essential step in enhancing cloud security, demonstrating the critical role that innovative technology plays in protecting information in the digital age.
