SolidRun and Amarisoft's Breakthrough in 5G Base Stations
In a groundbreaking collaboration, SolidRun and Amarisoft have successfully launched compact, high-performance 4G/5G base stations on an embedded x86 platform. This innovation represents a significant advancement in telecommunications, eliminating the need for bulky servers while providing a robust infrastructure for modern communication networks.
SolidRun, renowned for its state-of-the-art System on Module (SOM) solutions and Single Board Computers (SBC), has teamed up with Amarisoft, a leader in software-defined wireless network technologies, to validate a fully functional base station capable of running both the gNB (next-generation Node B) and 5GC (5G core) on SolidRun’s compact Ryzen Embedded V3000 COM Express Type 7 module, mounted on the HoneyComb carrier board.
This state-of-the-art solution not only sets a new benchmark for performance and efficiency but also makes it feasible to deploy high-quality 5G services without the expansive footprint and power requirements typically associated with traditional servers. Remarkably, the assembled system operates with a bandwidth of 100MHz, utilizing 4T4R MIMO technology, while executing a complete virtualized 4G/5G software stack from Amarisoft without the need for external accelerators, FPGAs, or GPUs.
Dr. Atai Ziv, CEO at SolidRun, emphasized the implications of this technology: “Running the full Amarisoft 5G stack on our AMD Ryzen V3000 equipped COM proves that compact x86 systems can now meet the demanding needs of modern 5G networks.” He further explained that this collaboration paves the way for more accessible, cost-effective solutions in private, tactical, and edge telecom networks.
The impressive flexibility of the combined solution accommodates various applications, particularly in private networks, tactical communications for defense, broadcast uplinks, and edge telecom deployments, as well as research and development projects. Its compact size and low energy consumption address challenges faced by integrators, enabling 4G/5G infrastructure implementation in areas where space and power are constrained.
Neda Nikaein, VP of Product and Operations at Amarisoft, highlighted the importance of this validation, stating, “Showcasing our complete 4G/5G stack on SolidRun's embedded platform emphasizes our goal of delivering high-performance telecom systems that prioritize energy efficiency.” This collaboration forms a critical building block for deploying future private networks and tactical systems, fulfilling the growing demands for flexibility in network performance and form factors.
The core of this innovative solution, the AMD Ryzen Embedded V3000 processor, boasts up to 8 cores and 16 threads, offering the high processing capabilities required for embedded telecom duties along with enterprise-grade I/O and impressive power efficiency. David Burns, Senior Director of Embedded Solutions at AMD, remarked, “This collaboration reflects the growing role AMD's embedded platforms play in the future of network infrastructure.” He highlighted that the use of the Ryzen Embedded V3000 in a complete 5G base station exemplifies AMD's commitment to advancing compact, high-performance solutions across various domains of telecom.
This announcement follows the AMD Adaptive Embedded Computing Tech Day in Bengaluru, where SolidRun showcased the platform's capabilities in supporting modern, efficient 5G network infrastructures. For developers and OEMs looking to innovate in the telecommunications space, this partnership signifies a transformative leap towards integrating practical, cost-efficient solutions in network deployment.
