Celebrating 60 Years of Japan-Korea Diplomatic Relations through Youth Sports Exchange

Celebrating Youth Sports Exchange Between Japan and South Korea

In commemorating the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea, the Japan Sports Association (JSPO) has organized its 29th youth summer sports exchange program. This initiative aims to promote sports involvement, viewing, and support. The program will dispatch a delegation of 218 Japanese athletes to Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, from August 3 to 8. Additionally, from August 17 to 22, Japan will host a contingent of 217 athletes from South Korea in Gifu Prefecture.

The previous participants of this exchange have included notable athletes such as Hiroshi Kiyotake, a former member of Japan's national soccer team, and Yuki Togashi, a member of Japan's national basketball team. The current cohort of athletes is also expected to make significant contributions to their respective sports in the future. To date, the total number of participants in this exchange program has reached an impressive 10,196.

The importance of such exchanges cannot be understated, especially considering that 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of Japan-Korea diplomatic relations, making this exchange an officially recognized commemorative event. Surveys conducted with past participants of the summer exchange reveal a growing sentiment of fondness toward Korea as well as a strong belief in the value of sports exchanges between the two nations, with over 90% expressing interest in participating again.

Overview of the Exchange Program

The structure and outcomes of the exchange program are designed to foster better relations and mutual understanding between Japan and Korea through sports. In recent years, an increasing percentage of participants have reported feeling a personal connection to Korea and an understanding of the importance of sports exchange. The JSPO is committed to enhancing these sentiments and cultivating a spirit of friendship and understanding through continued engagement in sports.
