Hidetoshi Muramatsu's Exhibition 'Return to Stone'
An exciting event is set to unfold in the art scene as Hidetoshi Muramatsu presents his solo exhibition titled 'Return to Stone,' running from November 21, 2025, to January 12, 2026, at the Art Cruise Gallery located in Toranomon, Tokyo. This exhibition marks the gallery's 10th showcase, affirming its commitment to presenting innovative artists and their works.
Hidetoshi Muramatsu, born in Shizuoka in 1988, has been captivated by the theme of 'the aura imbued in objects' since his graduate school days. His artistic approach involves transforming items imbued with traces of time and human use into stone, thereby prolonging the memories and relationships associated with them into the future. By juxtaposing the eternal qualities of stone with the ephemeral essence of human-made objects, Muramatsu seeks to unearth new forms of existence.
The inspiration for his artworks often emerges from serendipitous encounters at antique shops or the intuitive moment when he decides, 'It’s time to turn this into stone.' Each chosen motif resonates deeply with his personal history, ranging from motorcycles and skateboards to guitars and headphones, all reflecting his memories and aspirations. Through this process, Muramatsu invites viewers to reconsider the intricate relationships between objects and humans.
The title, 'Return to Stone,' encapsulates the artist's philosophy, asserting that 'all origins lie within the stone.' Objects like iron and glass ultimately derive from ores and return to stone in a cyclical journey. The artworks presented in this exhibition visualize this cyclical nature, encouraging viewers to traverse through past, present, and future while engaging in a silent discourse on the essence of existence.
