Active Minds Joins with ALS Association to Promote Mental Health and Raise Awareness this May

Collaboration for a Cause

In May 2025, Active Minds and the ALS Association united efforts to emphasize the importance of mental health and support for ALS during Mental Health Awareness Month and ALS Awareness Month. To celebrate this collaboration, they are reintroducing the inspirational #SpeakYourMIND Challenge, a modern take on the iconic Ice Bucket Challenge. This initiative has already generated over $400,000, aiding both organizations in their missions to improve mental health and provide necessary support to those affected by ALS.

A Legacy of Change

The original Ice Bucket Challenge, which took the social media world by storm in 2014, was crucial in raising awareness for ALS and generated millions of dollars in funding for research. It fundamentally changed public perceptions of the disease, sparking a global movement that still resonates today. Over a decade later, this renewed initiative bridges the gap between mental health advocacy and support for ALS, showcasing a commitment to both physical and mental wellness.

Calaneet Balas, the President and CEO of the ALS Association, expressed the significance of this partnership, stating, "The Ice Bucket Challenge transformed the fight against ALS by exposing its complexities and inspiring ground-level support. We are thrilled to harness this momentum to elevate mental health awareness, which is equally crucial."

Advocating Together for Awareness

Alison Malmon, the Founder and Executive Director of Active Minds, stressed the interconnectedness of physical and mental health in advocating for both causes. "This campaign transcends beyond a fleeting trend; it reflects our dedication to standing together against the stigma surrounding mental health and ALS. Each individual, whether dealing with mental health challenges or facing an ALS diagnosis, deserves support amidst their battles. Together, we are paving avenues for awareness and action that leads to hope."

Moreover, the Ice Bucket Challenge originally raised $115 million for ALS research, which catalyzed an additional $1 billion in further funding. This financial backing paved the way for advanced treatments, including solutions that reverse disease progression in certain ALS forms. As the campaign re-emerges in 2025, it continues to combine advocacy for brain and body health into a cohesive movement that demands focus and action on both fronts.

Throughout this month, Active Minds and the ALS Association will distribute resources, share personal narratives, and encourage community involvement while spreading awareness through calls to action. They will also showcase a video of Malmon and Balas partaking in the Ice Bucket Challenge, a symbolic moment highlighting their shared mission.
