Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project Triumphs at Biodiversity Award in Taipei Summit

Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project Wins International Biodiversity Award

On June 4, 2025, the AI with Purpose Global Summit in Taipei concluded successfully, hosted by Taiwan Mobile, the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association (TEEMA). This two-day summit drew nearly 1,000 experts from industry, administration, and academia, focusing on the role of artificial intelligence in sustainability and global infrastructure.

A highlight of the summit was the Digital with Purpose awards, where Taiwan Mobile’s "AI Ocean Project" received the distinguished International Biodiversity Award. Competing among over 24 contenders from around the world, this marks the second consecutive year that Taiwan Mobile has claimed an international title, following its Smart City Award win for the "MyCharge" service in 2024. This accolade underscores Taiwan's leadership in leveraging AI for ecological conservation and sustainable practices.

Dr. Tzi-cker Chiueh, Director General of the Delta Research Center, emphasized the intelligent use of green electricity for sustainable AI expansion in his keynote address. Following him, Dr. Yi-Chin Lin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, elaborated on establishing a global governance platform, outlining Taiwan's five strategic priorities for AI development, which include computing power, data exchange, talent nurturing, industrial promotion, and capital investment.

The award-winning AI Ocean Project is distinguished by its innovative combination of AI image recognition, generative AI chatbots, and community engagement to build the first comprehensive knowledge base of marine species in traditional Chinese. More than 9,000 citizens contributed over 19,000 images, assisting the AI system in identifying over 150 common Taiwanese marine species. Iris Liu, Vice President of Sustainable Branding and Public Relations at Taiwan Mobile, highlighted the AI Ocean Project as evidence of the company’s commitment to Digital with Purpose, which has been championed since 2020. "This award is not solely about technological innovation; it emphasizes the value of harnessing digital power for sustainable transformation," explained Liu.

Luis Neves, CEO of GeSI, expressed the summit's profound significance, stressing that the "AI with Purpose" philosophy is about collective effort toward a peaceful, sustainable future rather than competition for planetary control. He confirmed GeSI's commitment to return to Taipei the following year. Richard Lee, President of TEEMA, reinforced this vision by asserting, "AI must become a force for social good and environmental sustainability." He reiterated Taiwan’s dedication to the sustainable development of AI and global collaboration.

In conclusion, the recognition received by Taiwan Mobile's projects is not only a testament to technological prowess but also reflects the broader commitment to fostering ecological balance through innovative solutions. The AI Ocean Project stands as a model for future initiatives striving for harmony between technology and biodiversity, highlighting the crucial role of community involvement and governmental support in tackling environmental challenges.
