Post-Marathon Spending Surge in Sanya Highlights Travel-Running Trend

The recently concluded Hainan (Sanya) Marathon, which took place in late 2025, marked a significant event as the first Class A certified marathon approved by the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA). Utilizing platforms such as Taobao and Fliggy, the organizers were able to engage with both domestic and international running enthusiasts effectively, thereby creating greater opportunities for participant spending.

The unique features of the Hainan Free Trade Port have also played a crucial role in facilitating this newfound economic synergy. With visa-free entry available to citizens from 86 countries and an international air network connecting 25 destinations across Asia and Europe, accessibility for international runners has significantly improved. Furthermore, recent updates to customs regulations expanded the list of duty-free items from 1,900 to over 6,600, including items needed for the marathon itself. This increase has led to reduced costs for essential equipment such as timing systems and professional supplies, allowing the organizers to reinvest savings back into improving overall operations and runner experiences.

The positive impact of the Hainan Marathon rippled well beyond race weekend, as evidenced by the continuous increase in hotel bookings during the months leading up to the event. Particularly during the New Year holidays and the Spring Festival, the marathon coincided with a peak travel period, leading to an influx of tourists. According to the Sanya Tourism Bureau, the city welcomed over 650,800 guests during the New Year holiday in 2026, generating substantial tourist spending of 1.299 billion yuan.

This overall travel momentum, driven by the marathon and upcoming holiday festivities, has resulted in a significant uptick in market activity, showcasing the powerful link between major sporting events and economic growth in related sectors.
