Revitalizing Tradition with Modern Style
Kamekonya Co., Ltd., based in Niigata City, Japan, is on a mission to redefine fashion using high-quality sashiko woven fabric. Their private brand, "Chess," led by CEO Toshiaki Fujioka, will unveil its new autumn collection during a two-day presentation at the Niigata Information Center "THE NIIGATA" in Ginza, Tokyo, from September 6th to 7th, 2025.
Embracing Heritage
Founded in 2023, "Chess" specializes in crafting high-quality products from sashiko fabric, stemming from a strong desire to preserve these traditional goods. The founder's family history in the dyeing industry is reflected in the designs, which aim not only to celebrate and preserve cultural heritage but also to invite customer feedback for future product development. The upcoming event presents a unique opportunity for attendees to engage directly with the products and the brand's vision.
Reviving Japanese Workwear
The concept of workwear isn't exclusive to Western industrial revolutions; it has deep roots in Japanese culture as well, noted in items like the "happi" coat worn by warriors or the "hanten" used by the common folk. These garments, employed as work attire or uniforms, showcase a rich history intertwined with daily life. Moreover, sashiko fabric has been used historically in various uniforms, including martial arts attire and even firefighter costumes. Its unique hand-stitched reinforcement not only offers warmth but has also garnered popularity as a robust fabric ideal for heavy-duty wear. Historically significant in fire-fighting culture, certain sashiko garments were considered luxury items, cherished for their resilience.
A Legacy of Dyeing and Craftsmanship
Kamekonya's heritage roots back to Fujioka Dye Factory in Agano City, Niigata Prefecture, which has a legacy of crafting traditional workwear. Since its establishment in the Edo period, the family business focused on dyeing and tailoring sashiko items, culminating in the establishment of the "Chess" brand aimed at responding to modern fashion needs while retaining traditional craftsmanship.
Breaking New Ground with Stretch
The challenge for "Chess" has been to innovate while respecting the brand's heritage. Customers have often requested added stretch in the fabric to enhance comfort and usability. In response, the brand developed a revolutionary fabric called the "SSF" (Stretch Sashiko Fabric), which stretches up to five times in width. Its construction involves using a stretchy weft yarn while maintaining the original warp, resulting in a durable, functional outerwear fabric that enhances both fit and movement.
Introducing the Swing Top
Among the first products made from the SSF is the swing top, a stylish Harrington jacket. This type of jacket, named by the founder of VAN, Kenzo Ishizu, has long been a staple in golf and casual wear. Classic film enthusiasts will recall the late actor Ken Takakura, who was known for wearing a similar jacket. By incorporating stretchy sashiko fabric, "Chess" enhances the swing top’s warmth and fit, making it ideal for a broad audience. Its increased range of motion and comfort promises to transform it into a sought-after piece for winter golfing and casual outings alike.
