KYOTOGRAPHIE Festival Overview
Since its inception in 2013,
KYOTOGRAPHIE has become one of Japan's few international photography festivals, celebrating tradition and culture. With exhibitions housed in prestigious historical and modern venues like the Kyoto Cultural Museum and Higashi Honganji Temple, the festival presents a unique collection of both Japanese and international works, showcasing valuable photographic collections.
Ruinart has been an esteemed participant since 2016. They established the
Ruinart Japan Award in 2021, aimed at supporting and recognizing emerging Japanese artists and creators. Award winners have the opportunity to engage in a residency program at Ruinart’s home in Reims, France, providing a platform to create and eventually present their work at subsequent
KYOTOGRAPHIE festivals.
This year's
Ruinart Japan Award, celebrating its fifth anniversary, was awarded to
Sari Shibata, a next-generation photographer. Shibata’s work reflects on the effects of changing environments and human activities, using her childhood experiences in the mountainous areas of Toyama Prefecture to explore the disconnect between humanity and nature, inspiring thought-provoking creations.
