Ericsson Marks Significant Expansion in Japan with R&D Investment for Future Connectivity
Ericsson's Bold Move to Reinforce Japan's Connectivity Landscape
On May 15, 2025, Ericsson, a leader in telecommunications, has revealed a significant commitment to enhancing its research and development (R&D) presence in Japan. This initiative is poised to create up to 300 high-skilled jobs, showcasing the importance of Japan in Ericsson's global strategy for connectivity.
During a visit by Börje Ekholm, Ericsson's President and CEO, the company's ambition to integrate Japan's ecosystem into its global framework was discussed. He noted, "Japan is globally recognized for its rapid adoption of innovative technologies. We are at the brink of a transformative era in technology, where connectivity facilitated by advanced networks will be crucial to realizing these innovations. Our investment will honor Japan's remarkable legacy in technology through advanced RAN R&D, particularly in 5G and beyond."
The partnership will not only cater to the Japanese market but will also align with Ericsson's international collaborations. Ekholm emphasized that their intent to expand R&D in Japan reflects its strategic significance, mentioning that it complements ongoing partnerships focused on 6G development. This partnership aims to leverage Japan's technological prowess and collaborative spirit in the telecommunications industry.
The planned investment focuses on high-performing programmable networks, which are essential in making groundbreaking technology applications, including artificial intelligence, viable for various industries. These networks promise rapid speeds, low latency, and vast data capacities, creating a robust foundation for next-gen solutions.
Per Narvinger, Executive Vice President and Head of Ericsson Networks, detailed how these initiatives will empower Ericsson to meet Japan's rising digital infrastructure demands. He highlighted the rich talent pool and vibrant technology sector in Japan as catalysts for establishing a solid R&D foundation.
"The global race towards digitalization is fiercely competitive, and having high-performance networks like programmable 5G is pivotal for Japan's future," Narvinger explained. "Ericsson is dedicated to fostering partnerships that industrialize an Open RAN-ready network, ensuring a prosperous digital landscape for Japan."
Ericsson’s investment strategy allocates approximately USD 5 billion yearly toward R&D, underscoring its commitment to reinforcing its leadership in 5G and other innovative solutions. Having established its presence in Japan since 1985, Ericsson has maintained operations in key locations including Tokyo, Yokohama, and Sendai, currently employing over 1,000 individuals within the country.
Furthermore, the company is collaborating with local institutions such as Yokohama National University and the University of Electro-Communications on pioneering research focused on 6G advancements.
This renewed investment is a testament to Ericsson's long-standing dedication to Japan and its recognition of the country as a progressive hub for technology and connectivity endeavors. The future for both Ericsson and Japan looks promising as they work collaboratively to shape a digitally empowered world.
With such robust initiatives on the horizon, Japan stands to significantly advance its technological landscape, and Ericsson is determined to play an instrumental role in this journey.
