Successful Drone Demonstration in Okinawa
In a groundbreaking event, Liberaware, located in Chiba, and QDS based in Fukuoka have conducted Japan's first demonstration flight of the IBIS2 drone. This notable event, supported by the Naha City Waterworks Bureau, served to showcase the drone's effectiveness in inspecting underground rainwater pipes.
During the demonstration, various stakeholders, including approximately 30 participants from the Okinawa Pipeline Management Association and multiple design consulting firms, observed firsthand the capabilities of the compact yet powerful IBIS2. Following the demo flight, an experience session allowing participants to operate the drone was held, enhancing understanding of its functionality.
About IBIS2
The IBIS2 drone is engineered specifically for inspecting cramped, dark, and hazardous indoor spaces. As one of the smallest drones available, it enhances convenience and versatility significantly, allowing for stable flights in constrained areas and producing crisp inspection footage.
Specifications include:
- - Dimensions: 194mm x 198.5mm x 58mm
- - Weight: 243g (including battery)
- - Made in Japan
Goals and Results of the Demonstration
The demonstration aimed at verifying the drone's operational effectiveness, safety, and capability to fly without human presence in the rainwater pipe inspections. The outcomes were promising, with successful data collection and filming within the pipe system. The participants were able to witness the drone’s utility in navigating underground infrastructure safely.
The next day’s hands-on operation session provided vital insights into the drone’s capabilities. Attendees were able to operate the IBIS2, experiencing its user-friendly controls and stable aerial performance, marking it as a significant learning opportunity.
Creating 3D Data Maps
The data gathered during the flight was used to generate point cloud data, culminating in a 3D model of the pipe's interior. By integrating ground-level environmental information using the SEAMS measurement system, a cohesive 3D data representation of both ground and underground terrain was produced. This visualization is pivotal for enhancing maintenance practices and improving visualization of current conditions.
Feedback from Participants
Participants remarked that the ability to inspect underground facilities more safely and efficiently is crucial for maintenance operations. The demonstration underscored how drone technology could streamline sewer facility management, improve safety measures, and facilitate rapid emergency responses. Participants also noted that experiencing the drone operation firsthand was an invaluable part of the demo.
This demonstration has played a critical role in validating and disseminating the effectiveness of the IBIS2 in sewer inspections. Both QDS and Liberaware are committed to integrating feedback from the field to develop drone technology solutions, explore new inspection methods, and push forward with technological innovations.
