JoAnna Nicholson Takes the Helm as Chief Legal Officer at NAPA Anesthesia

NAPA, the premier single-specialty anesthesia management organization in the United States, has appointed JoAnna Nicholson, JD, as its new Chief Legal Officer. This pivotal role will see Nicholson overseeing the legal and regulatory compliance functions of the company, driving strategic initiatives while ensuring the organization maintains robust legal governance and risk management protocols.

Nicholson, a seasoned expert in healthcare law and regulatory compliance, has an impressive history of advising healthcare providers and industry stakeholders. She returns to NAPA after holding the position of Chief Legal Officer at Spire Orthopedic Partners. Prior to that, she was Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at NAPA, where she played a significant role in shaping the organization’s legal and compliance frameworks, which are critical to supporting its impressive national growth.

Rafael Cartagena, MD, the CEO of NAPA, expressed his enthusiasm about Nicholson’s return, stating, "JoAnna's return to NAPA reflects her deep alignment with our mission and vision. Her extensive experience in legal leadership, combined with her comprehensive knowledge of the healthcare industry, will be invaluable as we navigate an increasingly intricate regulatory environment."

Nicholson’s earlier career includes practicing healthcare law at prominent law firms like Moses Singer LLP and Nixon Peabody LLP. During her time there, she provided strategic counseling on various issues, including transactions, regulatory compliance, HIPAA, and data privacy. In addition to her practical experience, she also contributes to the field academically as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University's Maurice A. Deane School of Law, where she teaches courses related to healthcare compliance and legal practices.

“I am thrilled to return to NAPA and contribute to shaping its future,” said Nicholson. “The organization’s culture brims with momentum and purpose, and I look forward to bolstering NAPA's growth and evolution—both in terms of patient care and operational functions that are vital for delivering high-quality anesthesia services.”

Nicholson's educational credentials are equally impressive, holding a Juris Doctor from Hofstra Law School and a Bachelor of Science from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
