XD THERMAL Expands Side Cooling Solutions for Cylindrical Cell Packs

In an impressive leap for thermal management technology, XD Thermal Technology has announced the expansion of its side cooling platform tailored for cylindrical cell battery packs. As a leader in thermal management solutions, XD Thermal is committed to addressing the complexities of heat accumulation that arise during the rapid charging and discharging of cylindrical batteries. With their advanced manufacturing capabilities and automotive-grade process controls, the company is set to become a key player in the evolving EV battery market.

One of the primary challenges in high-performance cylindrical battery packs is managing the intense heat generated during high current and voltage operations. XD Thermal's innovative lateral liquid cooling concept integrates serpentine tubes along the sides of the battery cells, significantly increasing the effective contact area compared to traditional bottom-plate cooling systems. This enhanced vertical contact surface helps resolve heat gradient issues, ensuring that each battery cell remains within an optimal temperature range—crucial for prolonging the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries.

XD Thermal has meticulously designed its cooling module platforms with robust structures and reliable quality controls. The cooling tubes are customized to fit various cylindrical cell layouts and can be flexibly combined with different collectors, supports, and piping configurations. Furthermore, validated flow path structures and stringent internal design standards guarantee predictable thermal performance, transitioning seamlessly from prototype development to mass production.

“The platform-based design reduces costs and development time, facilitating agile development for our clients,” notes Guo, a technical engineer at XD Thermal. “With proven solutions for pipe connections, electrical insulation, and geometric combinations, we assist numerous clients in efficiently finalizing their lateral cooling battery developments.”

In 2024, XD Thermal launched high-volume serpentine tube production lines capable of producing up to 30,000 units daily. This facility integrates bending, welding, cleaning, and leak testing through automation. The welding quality is ensured via 360-degree 3D scanning inspections on tubes, collectors, and related components to verify comprehensive weld coverage.

“The start-up and industrialization process is just as essential as product development,” highlights Sun, the Manufacturing Engineering Director at XD Thermal. “We offer a repeatable and scalable production system with a confirmed development roadmap and standardized operating procedure (SOP) timelines, proving our capacity for rapid production start-up and line expansion.” Typically, line preparation and tooling can be completed within six to eight weeks before the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).

XD Thermal's impressive industrialization and delivery capabilities have garnered recognition from system-level clients. In November 2025, OP Mobility, a global tier-one automotive supplier, officially nominated XD Thermal as its thermal management component supplier within its supply chain.

As cylindrical C2P battery packs rapidly gain market share in electric vehicles and other applications, XD Thermal anticipates growing demand for their side cooling solutions. Proficiency in high-capacity production, highly automated lines, and mature design platforms will be critical in meeting this demand. With strategic developments in place, XD Thermal stands poised to capitalize on the burgeoning market for cylindrical battery systems in the coming years.
