Exciting Opportunities Await: Future of STEM Scholars Initiative Opens Applications at HBCU Week College Fair

Future of STEM Scholars Initiative Opens Applications for 2026

The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) launched its application period for 2026 during the annual HBCU Week Foundation College Fair, held in Wilmington, Delaware. This event is significant, marking the sixth time FOSSI has commenced its application process in coordination with this fair, which attracts thousands of students and educators from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

FOSSI is a national scholarship program established by a coalition of organizations, including the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), The Chemours Company, and the HBCU Week Foundation. The initiative aims to provide scholarships worth $40,000, dispersed as $10,000 per year for four years, to high school seniors who aspire to pursue industry-relevant STEM degrees at HBCUs.

The overarching mission of FOSSI is to broaden the talent pool within the chemical sector by igniting a passion for education and career opportunities in critical fields like chemical and mechanical engineering. The program not only awards scholarships but also intricately connects recipients with over 80 corporations, granting them access to internships and extensive insights into potential careers within the chemical industry and aligned sectors. This comprehensive approach includes mentorship and various skills training programs designed to help students reach their educational and professional aspirations. For instance, FOSSI celebrated a remarkable achievement this Spring, with over 92% of its first graduating class successfully matriculating to further education.

Since its inception in 2020, FOSSI has made palpable strides in enhancing educational opportunities for students:
  • - 860+ scholarships funded
  • - $40 million+ raised for scholarships and support
  • - 5,000+ applications submitted from eager students
  • - Scholars now attending 47 different HBCUs across 33 states

Mark Costa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Eastman, and FOSSI Chairman, expressed pride in the initiative’s commitment to expanding STEM opportunities in the chemical industry. "By launching the application process at the HBCU Week College Fair, we are reaching directly those students who are genuinely passionate about STEM education and are enthusiastic about making meaningful contributions to society," he stated.

Potential applicants for the 2026 FOSSI scholarships can submit their applications until January 15, 2026, ensuring plenty of time for those eager to take part in this transformative initiative. Eligible students can access the application through the official FOSSI website, www.FutureofSTEMScholars.org.

In summary, the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative represents an invaluable opportunity for students pursuing degrees in critical STEM fields at HBCUs, enhancing their educational experiences while paving the way for bright futures in the chemical industry and beyond.
