Strengthening the Future of Biogas in Sweden

Domsjö Fabriker, a prominent biorefinery, is advancing its initiatives at the High Coast Innovation Park based in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. With plans to enhance its production capabilities, the company has its eyes set on the future of liquefied biogas (LBG), a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.

The project aims to convert industrial by-products into LBG, which is particularly suitable for the heavy transport sector, including trucking and maritime shipping. To support this ambitious venture, Domsjö Fabriker has sought a financial subsidy from Sweden’s Klimatklivet program, which aims to drive climate investments. The ultimate goal is for the new facility to be operational by the end of 2028.

Environmental Impact and Regional Benefits

Once fully operational, the facility is projected to substitute around 100 GWh of fossil diesel annually with an equivalent amount of LBG, leading to a significant reduction of approximately 26,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This shift not only contributes to local and national environmental targets but also enhances Sweden's energy independence by promoting a robust local supply of biogas.

As a country that relies heavily on imported fuel, increasing the domestic production of liquefied biogas is essential for boosting regional self-sufficiency. It also fortifies the security of supply and improves access to renewable energy resources.

Domsjö Fabriker is collaborating closely with Adven, a partner specializing in energy infrastructure and resource valorization. Adven has been instrumental in the development and design of this project, and both companies are keen on extending their partnership through subsequent project phases.

Implementation Process

To ensure the project meets its timeline for commissioning by late 2028, it is imperative that the required permits and subsidies are secured promptly. Both Adven and Domsjö Fabriker are in discussions with relevant authorities to streamline the permitting process.
