Nextant Aerospace Achieves FAA Certification for Starlink Connectivity



In a significant advancement for business aviation technology, Nextant Aerospace, the engineering division of Flexjet, has earned FAA certification for the installation of Starlink inflight connectivity kits on Bombardier’s Global 5000 and 5500 jets. This certification is a major milestone that enables the installation of Starlink systems at authorized dealers and directly through Bombardier Service Centers around the globe.

The certification allows for the addition of high-speed internet capabilities to these aircraft, marking an important step forward in addressing connectivity challenges faced by passengers and crews during flights. Historically, in-flight internet service on jets has been anything but dependable, with many systems struggling to deliver consistent performance, particularly on long-haul flights. However, with the introduction of the Starlink system, passengers can now expect a reliable, high-speed internet experience right from takeoff until landing, regardless of their flight routes, including long overwater segments.

Developed by SpaceX, the Starlink system leverages a vast constellation of over 6,000 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to provide low-latency internet access worldwide. This advanced solution is set to redefine expectations for business travel, allowing guests to conduct business as usual while flying across long distances.

Jay Heublein, President of Flexjet Global Maintenance and Product Support, stated, “Reliable high-speed internet connectivity for all flight phases was one of the last significant technological hurdles our industry needed to overcome. The technology developed by Starlink represents a significant advancement in inflight connectivity. Feedback from users has been spectacular since its rollout.”

The Starlink system’s hardware further enhances reliability, utilizing a phased-array antenna design that eliminates moving parts—a feature that significantly reduces potential failure points compared to previous technologies. As travelers increasingly seek seamless connectivity while airborne, this certified installation offers them the ability to stay connected without interruptions.

Looking ahead, Nextant Aerospace plans to expand its certification efforts to other mid-sized and super-mid-sized aircraft. In early 2025, they will launch installation kits for several aircraft models, including the Bombardier Challenger 3500, 350, and 300, along with Embraer’s Praetor series. The next wave of certification will follow closely, targeting the Embraer Phenom 300 and 100 series of jets, consolidating Nextant’s reputation as a leader in the field of aviation technology.
