OceanaGold Unveils Promising New Drill Results from Wharekirauponga Project and Updates on Waihi North Progress
OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC, NYSE: OGC) recently announced encouraging drill results from its Wharekirauponga site, situated just 10 kilometers north of the Waihi Operation in New Zealand. In total, the company completed 16 new drill holes as part of its exploration and resource conversion initiative, revealing exceptional gold grades that fortify their prospects for the area. The standout results include impressive intersections such as 6.3 meters at 97.2 grams per tonne (g/t) Au from the East Graben (EG) Vein. Other notable results included 8.5 meters at 41.5 g/t Au from another drill location, corroborating the high-grade nature and continuity of the mineralization within the EG Vein zone.
The results demonstrate not only the ongoing development of the EG Vein but also suggest strong potential for growth, as the southern high-grade zone now appears to extend beyond previously reported reserves. OceanaGold's President and CEO, Gerard Bond, expressed enthusiasm over the results, indicating that the project continues to show remarkable continuity and additional up-dip extension of this high-grade zone. With five drill rigs now operational, the intensity of exploration is set to increase, targeting the open-ended areas of this promising deposit.
In conjunction with the Wharekirauponga drilling update, OceanaGold is progressing well on the Waihi North Project. Construction and underground tunneling are on schedule, with approximately 350 meters of decline development completed since operations began in May 2026. The development of ventilation shafts is underway, and the project anticipates enhancements such as a plant expansion plan to handle up to 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) in support of concurrent mining at both the Martha Underground Mine (MUG) and the Wharekirauponga Underground Mine (WUG).
The upcoming Waihi District technical report, set for release in January 2027, promises to offer updated Mineral Reserves and Resource estimates and will reflect the positive results of ongoing evaluations aimed at extending the operating life of the Martha Underground—currently projected to extend beyond 2033. Concomitantly, emphasis is being placed on the design and execution of advanced drilling programs to maximize resource growth at Wharekirauponga.
The operational integrity of OceanaGold’s existing facilities has been underscored by the efficient management of water treatment operations that kicked off in September. With early works on the new tailings storage facility set to commence shortly, the company’s dedication to sustainable and effective mining practices remains a priority.
Overall, the latest results signal a strong trajectory for OceanaGold and provide a compelling narrative as they forge ahead with the exploration and development of these promising mineral projects. As such, shareholders and stakeholders alike are optimistic about the enhanced potential of the Waihi District's capabilities, further auguring well for the company’s future endeavors in gold and copper mining across its operational landscape.
