Kanin Energy Secures Funding to Expand Waste Heat Solutions



In a significant move towards boosting energy efficiency in heavy industries across North America, Kanin Energy has successfully raised up to $100 million in equity financing. This new capital, which includes commitments from S2G Investments and the Canada Growth Fund, will empower Kanin to enhance its innovative waste heat to power (WHP) solutions.

Details of the Fundraising


Kanin Energy announced that the financing deal comprises $50 million from S2G Investments and an equivalent amount from the Canada Growth Fund. This funding is aimed at supporting the development, construction, and operational phases of WHP projects, which aim to repurpose waste heat from industrial processes into usable electricity. The company currently has a portfolio that includes one operational facility and several in various stages of construction.

Janice Tran, CEO of Kanin Energy, emphasized the company's mission stating, "Kanin was built on the belief that industrial facilities already hold the solution to their own energy challenges; they just need the right partner to execute." By engaging with strategic investors like S2G and CGF, Kanin aims to amplify its reach and impact within the industrial sector at a crucial time when power costs are on the rise.

Addressing Energy Efficiency


The industrial sector is known for producing significant waste heat during normal operations – a resource that is often deemed lost. This heat is generated in various industries including oil and gas extraction, cement production, and metal manufacturing. By capturing this waste heat, Kanin offers a dual benefit: providing clean energy without generating additional emissions.

Studies reveal that almost 58% of energy consumed during industrial processes is lost as waste heat. Kanin’s technology aims to convert this underutilized energy source into baseload electricity that is supplied directly to host facilities or local customers at competitive rates. This innovative approach not only aids industrial facilities in lowering their electricity costs but also supports their emissions reduction goals.

Proven and Scalable Solutions


Kanin’s business model revolves around the Energy-as-a-Service paradigm, which not only includes energy provision but also the development, construction, and management of energy power assets tailored for industrial applications. The company focuses on deploying established technologies, specifically using organic Rankine cycle (ORC) turbines, which have been successfully utilized for over 40 years.

Kanin currently boasts a commercial portfolio of approximately 50 megawatts derived from WHP projects that are either in operation or under construction. With clear evidence of its operational success, including a WHP project delivering zero-emission electricity to the University of Dayton, Kanin is well-positioned to meet the escalating demand for sustainable energy solutions in the industrial sector.

During this fundraising announcement, Marisa Sweeney, Principal at S2G, highlighted that the push for renewable energy sources is increasing due to rising power prices, grid congestion, and reliability issues faced by industrial companies. She remarked, "There’s a clear and growing incentive to capture waste heat and put it to productive use, as it presents a largely untapped opportunity."
