Okayama University Advances Collaboration with the Ministry of Education for Research Innovation

Okayama University's Strategic Collaboration with the Ministry of Education

On May 15, 2026, Okayama University welcomed Keiko Aihara, head of the Human Resource Policy Promotion Office at Japan's Ministry of Education, and her colleague Hayate Nakano for an important exchange of ideas. The meeting took place at the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) on the Tsushima Campus, where university officials including Masaki Kawamoto, Deputy Director of the Research and Innovation Co-Creation Organization, and Yumiko Morimoto, head of the Human Resources Division, were present for discussions.

The session marks a significant step in the university's ongoing efforts under the J-PEAKS project (Promoting Characteristic Research Universities), a program initiated by the Ministry of Education to elevate regional universities' capabilities. Through this initiative, Okayama University aims to realize its Long-Term Vision 2025, implementing various strategic measures such as the Research Development Management Human Resource Certification System and revisiting personnel policies to optimize faculty and staff roles.

Deputy Director Kawamoto addressed attendees about these ambitious initiatives and the importance of maintaining a clear vision as the university forges ahead. The ministerial representatives showed keen interest, probing about key elements that facilitated the organization of these efforts. Insights from Kawamoto and Morimoto highlighted that, last year, 27 dialogue sessions were held with faculty and staff, emphasizing the value of face-to-face interactions fostered by President Nasu as integral to achieving a shared vision among all stakeholders.

Following the exchange about the university's initiatives, Aihara raised a compelling topic: the obstacles hindering the optimal utilization of doctoral talents. Participants contributed a variety of perspectives, concluding that not only faculty's mindset shifts are critical but also establishing supportive financial systems and frameworks is crucial in this endeavor.

Moving forward with the J-PEAKS initiative, Okayama University aspires to enhance the quality of research management personnel, including URAs and skilled staff, and to promote the shared use of research equipment, ultimately generating new research and innovations. As a steadfast regional university at the forefront of unique research, Okayama University invites continuous engagement and anticipation for its transformative journey aimed at societal impact.
