In response to the escalating drought and water crisis in Puerto Rico, Alley Cat Allies, a leader in the global feline community, is taking immediate action to provide emergency relief to the cats and their caregivers in San Juan. The organization is distributing essential supplies, including water and wet cat food, to address urgent needs in a community grappling with severe water shortages.

Collaborative Efforts for Effective Relief

Alley Cat Allies has partnered with Save A Gato, a local organization dedicated to the welfare of cats, to ensure that these supplies reach those in need. This collaboration aims to bring relief not only to the felines but also to the individuals who dedicate their time and resources to caring for them. The ongoing issue of rotating water shortages of up to 48 hours is impacting residents’ daily lives, making it increasingly difficult to meet the basic needs of themselves and their pets.

Coryn Julien, the communications director for Alley Cat Allies, states, “We have been working in San Juan for several years to protect community cats. We understand deeply the needs of the people who devote so much of their lives to caring for them. By delivering these essential supplies during this critical time, we are providing much-needed relief both to the cats and to their admirers.”

Ana María Salicrup, board secretary of Save A Gato, emphasizes the importance of access to water, especially during an unprecedented heatwave in Puerto Rico: “We are working to help meet community needs, including those of our cats, whose wellbeing relies on us during this emergency situation.”

Alley Cat Allies has been active in Puerto Rico since 2023, focusing on protecting community cats from a controversial National Park Service (NPS) plan aimed at capturing and euthanizing them. Instead, Alley Cat Allies has advocated for a more humane solution, negotiating an agreement with NPS that ensures the safety of these cats.

As part of their ongoing efforts, Alley Cat Allies works alongside local authorities and various organizations, including Save A Gato, to strive for meaningful and lasting change for cats across the city. Their goal is to promote community programs that protect and enhance the lives of these animals.
