Understanding Greenwashing: Regulatory Trends and Practical Responses for Japanese Companies

Seminar Overview

The JPI (Japan Planning Institute) is hosting an important seminar titled “Understanding the Risks Hidden in Environmental Disclosure: Latest Regulatory Trends and Practical Responses to Greenwashing” on July 8, 2025. The event will feature Takashi Kitajima, Partner Lawyer at TMI General Legal Practice, who will provide valuable insights into the latest developments regarding regulatory measures around greenwashing.

Context and Importance

In recent times, the urgency of global environmental issues and growing interest in sustainability have driven companies to actively promote their products and services while highlighting their commitments to climate change and other sustainable practices. However, there have been increasing instances where the claims made do not reflect the actual practices, leading to misleading implications on companies' environmental efforts. This phenomenon is commonly known as greenwashing.

With tightening regulations in the EU and legal actions against misleading advertising, greenwashing has become an issue that Japanese companies can no longer overlook. This seminar aims to shed light on greenwashing—what it means, its implications, regulatory frameworks both domestically and internationally, and how companies should respond.
