Promotool's Fragrance Engineering Enhances Indoor Wellness with Kiso Hinoki Aroma

Promotool's Innovative Fragrance Technology

Promotool Corporation, a pioneering scent technology company based in Bunkyo, Tokyo, recently unveiled its groundbreaking research on the sustained release of α-pinene, a key aromatic component of Kiso Hinoki essential oil. This presentation took place during the 3rd Japanese Forest Medicine Conference held on August 22-23, 2026. Guided by the esteemed Takushi Watanabe, Deputy Director and Senior Perfumer at Promotool's Fragrance Technology Institute, the research addresses not only the preservation of forest scents in urban settings but also their implications for human health and well-being.

The Convergence of Scent and Forest Medicine

The research focuses on a product named Forest Bath HINOKI, which is designed to create a calming aromatic environment that evokes the forest indoors. The product harnesses the phytochemicals found in Kiso Hinoki essential oil, aiming to provide a soothing aroma reminiscent of a forest atmosphere within office spaces. Starting from June 2025, Promotool partnered with Professor Li Qing, a global expert in forest medicine, to explore the theme, “Bringing Forest Air to Offices.” Through their collaboration, they aim to develop technology that safely and consistently disperses the fresh scent of the forest in work environments.

Sustainable Aroma Technology

Previously, α-pinene has been recognized for its role in enhancing forest bathing experiences, yet its high volatility poses challenges in maintaining its concentration indoors. Watanabe’s research meticulously designed a blend of components that significantly improves the persistence of α-pinene in indoor settings. Utilizing state-of-the-art gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) technology, the study measured the concentration changes of α-pinene in real office environments. Remarkably, the new blend demonstrated a fourfold increase in sustainability compared to using Kiso Hinoki oil alone, effectively providing a continuous aromatic experience for approximately one month (or 192 hours over 24 business days).

A Unique Approach to Social Implementation

What sets this research apart is its dual focus: not only does it examine the physiological and psychological impacts of forest aromas, but it also confronts the key social question of how to sustain these aromas in urban indoor spaces. By combining the artistic intuition of perfumery with rigorous scientific analysis, Promotool seeks to harness the insights from forest medicine and apply them pragmatically to enhance people's living environments.

Commitment to Well-being Through Aroma

Forest Bath HINOKI represents a commitment to improving both individual well-being and corporate health management through the enchanting fragrance of Kiso Hinoki. In the future, Promotool aims to deploy this innovative technology in various environments, including offices, hotels, and wellness facilities, enhancing the value of the Kiso Hinoki as a regional resource while creating exceptional aromatic experiences.

About the Japanese Forest Medicine Conference

The Japanese Forest Medicine Conference organized by the Japan Forest Medicine Association serves as a vital scholarly platform promoting discussions on the health impacts of forest bathing and environments. Researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry representatives converge to share findings and advocate for forest medicine’s role in public health and societal benefits. Promotool’s participation at this conference is a significant step toward advancing scientific fragrance research and its societal implementation.

Understanding Forest Bath HINOKI

Forest Bath HINOKI uses Kiso Hinoki essential oil sourced from the Akazawa Natural Recreation Forest, recognized as one of Japan's three great forests. This area is famous as the birthplace of forest bathing. The research’s significance lies in translating Japan's rich forest resources through scent technology into urban environments. Its innovative blending techniques have confirmed that the durability of phytochemicals released in indoor spaces is over four times greater than that of the essential oil alone.

As the scent gently permeates through spaces, it creates a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a forest, offering a peaceful retreat within the hustle and bustle of urban life. "Forest Bath HINOKI" epitomizes the fusion of forest medicine, analytical data, and olfactory technology into a holistic indoor aroma solution.
