American Public University System Completes Merger

The merger of the American Public University System (APUS) signifies an important milestone for the institution as it combines strengths from four established universities: American Military University (AMU), American Public University (APU), Rasmussen University, and Hondros College of Nursing. This strategic alliance aims to enhance educational offerings and better serve a diverse and global community of approximately 109,000 current students and 250,000 alumni.

The newly unified institution will now be offering over 290 degree programs designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s learners. This combination not only streamlines resources and operations but also reinforces APUS's commitment to providing quality education. Angela Selden, who was already serving as President and CEO of American Public Education, Inc., has been appointed as the Chancellor of the new system. Selden expressed her excitement, stating, "I am honored to lead our newly unified institution during this pivotal time. We aim to bring together our collective strengths and missions into one cohesive unit focused on educating students for service."

To govern the organization, a new Board of Trustees has been established with representatives from each of the former institutions. This board is tasked with guiding the future of the newly formed system, ensuring that it remains aligned with its educational mission. Key members include Chair Matthew A. Yale, Vice Chair Dr. Mary A. Papazian, and several retired military leaders who bring experience and dedication to the development of future leaders.

The merger has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission, a recognized accreditation agency by the U.S. Department of Education, for operational compliance under the American Public University System’s established accreditation. This is critical as it safeguards the eligibility of all students attending the institution for federal student financial aid programs.

Dr. Michelle Newman has been appointed as the first Chief Academic Officer of the new system. She remarked, “Today, we are standing at the intersection of a proud legacy and an even brighter future. We are committed to inspiring our students to become tomorrow's leaders.
