Japan Initiates First Pilot for Autonomous Truck and Freight Rail Modal Combination

Innovative Pilot for Autonomous Logistics in Japan

In a groundbreaking initiative, three prominent companies - Nippon Express Holdings Group's Japanese National Transportation, JR Freight, and T2 - have commenced Japan's first pilot combining autonomous trucks with freight trains. This advanced logistics model aims to revolutionize the transport sector while addressing critical challenges such as environmental issues and labor shortages.

Background of the Initiative

The pilot project marks a significant collaboration between major logistics players. Nippon Express, represented by its president Tomohiro Horikiri, partners with JR Freight, led by Shin Inukai, and T2, under the helm of CEO Seiji Morimoto. This effort is set against the backdrop of increasing demand for efficient and sustainable transportation solutions.

The inaugural trial will transport standard temperature goods from Snow Brand Milk Products Co., Ltd., from Hokkaido to Kansai. As part of this trial, T2's level 2 autonomous truck technology will take center stage, although plans to employ level 4 autonomous trucks in future iterations of this project are already in discussion.

Goals of the Project

The initiative targets several key objectives:
  • - Environmental Sustainability: Addressing global climate challenges through energy-efficient logistics practices.
  • - Labor Environment Improvement: Enhancing working conditions in the logistics industry.
  • - Mitigating Labor Shortages: Contributing to the shortage of workforce in the transport sector.

Commencing in November 2024, this collaboration includes Nippon Express, National Transportation, Japan Freightliner, JR Freight, and T2, who have all been actively engaged in potential discussions about the operational strategies.
