Hyundai and Texas Children's Renew Initiative for Child Passenger Safety in Houston

Hyundai Hope, the corporate social responsibility arm of Hyundai Motor America, has made a significant commitment to improving child passenger safety in Greater Houston. In collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital, Hyundai aims to provide families with essential resources and education regarding safe car seat usage. This renewed partnership, entering its second year, includes a $25,000 donation directed towards the Texas Children's Center for Childhood Injury Prevention.

The importance of child safety seats cannot be underestimated. These seats are designed to protect young passengers during travel, yet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nearly half of these seats are used incorrectly. This alarming statistic highlights the necessity of ongoing education and support for parents and caregivers regarding the proper installation and usage of car seats.

To further this mission, Hyundai and Texas Children’s recently organized a child safety seat check event at the Steve Radack Community Center. During this event, certified child passenger safety technicians (CPSTs) meticulously inspected car seats for factors such as expiration dates, potential manufacturer recalls, and appropriate fit for individual children. Families were provided with crucial guidance on the effective use of their car seats, with some families receiving complimentary car seat replacements when necessary.

Kristen Beckworth, manager of the Center for Childhood Injury Prevention at Texas Children's, expressed gratitude for Hyundai's continued support, stating, "Through their $25,000 gift, we can expand our lifesaving child passenger safety work even further. This support will allow us to provide hundreds of families with access to certified child passenger safety technicians, free car seat checks across Greater Houston, and most importantly, car seats and booster seats for families who otherwise could not afford them."

Texas Children's Center for Childhood Injury Prevention plays a pivotal role in the Safe Kids Greater Houston initiative, which operates over 20 car seat inspection stations throughout the region. Each year, the program trains nearly 50 car seat safety technicians, ensuring that families receive expert assistance. Furthermore, they distribute more than 1,000 car seats to families in need, along with offering educational workshops and safety seat inspections across the Houston area.
