Enhancing Workplace Safety: Construction Safety Week 2026
Construction Safety Week, an annual event that underscores the commitment to health and safety in the construction industry, is set to take place from May 4 to May 8, 2026. This year's theme,
'Recognize, Respond, Respect', aims to unify efforts in preventing serious injuries and illnesses (SIFs) across the sector, reinforcing a culture of safety that includes every stakeholder.
Alliance with OSHA
A significant highlight of this year's Safety Week is the newly established partnership with the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The collaboration is designed to enhance the effort to prevent SIFs and promote Total Worker Health throughout the construction project's lifecycle. Adam Jelen, President and CEO of Gilbane Building and 2026 Safety Week Chair, stated, "This alliance will support information sharing, education, and resources that strengthen the focus on elevating health and safety across the industry."
This partnership is poised to culminate in the
National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, which encourages companies in both the U.S. and Canada to pause work on May 6 for safety discussions and demonstrations, creating the largest safety stand-down in the industry.
A Five-Year Plan for Safety Culture
Since its inception in 2014, Construction Safety Week has consistently advanced best practices and raised awareness regarding critical issues, including mental health. This year, the event is rolling out a
five-year vision aimed at deepening the culture of care, emphasizing respect for skilled crafts, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders in health and safety management.
The initiative also seeks to realign the understanding, ownership, and engineering of health and safety across all phases of construction projects. The theme emphasizes the importance of recognizing, responding to, and respecting hazards, thereby helping to cultivate a profound safety culture.
Technical Bulletin Series
To support the theme’s pillars, a new series of
technical bulletins has been launched. Developed collaboratively with industry leaders and safety experts, these bulletins aim to solidify the shared responsibility toward protecting workers throughout the project lifecycle.
As noted by Jelen, "For over a decade, Construction Safety Week has been pivotal in effecting real change in how health and safety is perceived and implemented across projects. By focusing on high-energy hazards, we are fortifying the overall safety culture, ensuring that every worker makes it home safely each day."
Engage and Participate
In addition to the educational resources, there’s the
'Spin the Wheel, Spot the Hazard' giveaway, where individuals and companies can participate between April 6 and May 7 for a chance to win $1,000. This initiative is developed to enhance hazard recognition skills among participants, further advancing the cause of safety.
Resources for Safety: Various free resources, including technical bulletins and mental health resources, can be accessed at

Community and Commitment
Construction Safety Week is not just an event; it represents an ongoing commitment to nurturing a culture of safety within the construction sector. It showcases best practices and resource-sharing as pivotal components of continuous improvement in workplace safety. The program is backed by over 150 supporters, including prominent contractors and sponsors, working collaboratively to amplify the message of health and safety throughout the industry.
For the 2026 Safety Week, elite partners include industry giants like 3M, Amazon Web Services, and DeWalt among many others, reinforcing the initiative’s endeavor to protect workers by advocating for heightened safety awareness and practices. Together, these efforts aim to create a more secure working environment for all professionals in the construction field.
