Nurturing the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs
The Impact Startup Association (ISA) has joined forces with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to foster the next generation of social entrepreneurs through the innovative 'Zero-1' acceleration program. This initiative aims to balance 'solving social issues' with 'sustainable growth,' ultimately striving to create positive impacts on society.
This partnership has already made significant strides. For the fiscal year 2024, two ISA member companies participated as mentors, while the highlight of the 'Zero-1' program was marked by the 'Zero-1 Final Pitch 2025' event. During this event, ISA's representative director, Yusuke Mizuno, led a special talk session, showcasing ISA's dedication to supporting students who aspire to engage in social entrepreneurship.
Through this collaboration, ISA aims to lay the groundwork for young talents to emerge as key players in the impact startup ecosystem, paving the way for sustainable innovation and broadening career options in the future.
Overview of J-StarX 'Zero-1' Program
The 'Zero-1' program is a public-private partnership that focuses on nurturing future social entrepreneurs. It offers support to students facing various social challenges, helping them transform their 'zero' ideas into impactful 'one' business ventures.
Interest in social entrepreneurship has surged, particularly among younger generations. To cultivate this interest, 'Zero-1' provides participants with immersive domestic retreats, hands-on guidance from seasoned social entrepreneurs, and opportunities for overseas training. Comments from METI
The 'Zero-1' initiative, aimed at supporting aspiring student social entrepreneurs, was established in 2023. Thanks to the collaboration with ISA member companies, many students had the chance to step into social entrepreneurship through mentorship and event participation last year. The entrepreneurs within ISA serve as role models for these students. This year, deeper collaboration will hopefully cultivate a community where industry leaders and aspiring young entrepreneurs can connect, thereby sparking a wave of social entrepreneurship among the younger generation.
Insights from ISA Mentors
The participation of its member companies as mentors marks a significant contribution to nurturing aspiring entrepreneurs. Here are thoughts from some mentors who are actively involved:
Shoji Sakamoto, CEO of HQ
"The role of social entrepreneurs is vital in addressing a wide range of societal challenges and crafting new values necessary for a sustainable future. My own journey towards starting my business highlighted the significance of practical knowledge over theoretical understanding when it comes to solving social issues. The 'Zero-1' program offers a unique platform where seasoned practitioners and future leaders engage meaningfully and share authentic challenges. It transcends conventional educational formats, effectively nurturing individuals who dare to pursue their ideals. I genuinely hope that numerous entrepreneurs will take their first steps through this program."
Yoshito Fukai, CEO of KAPOK JAPAN
"This marks my second year as a mentor for 'Zero-1'. I’m driven by the aspiration to accelerate positive societal changes. My business experience taught me the formidable energy and resolve required to resolve social issues. I aim to share the insights I've gained and tackle challenges together with the next generation. I wholeheartedly believe that our individual actions can collectively fuel significant societal progress. As a mentor, I approach this journey with the philosophy of 'half learning, half teaching' and look forward to supporting everyone in contributing to a better society."
Insights from the 'Zero-1 Final Pitch 2025'
The culmination of the 'Zero-1' program was celebrated on February 26, 2025, during a vital pitch event that saw participation from governmental bodies, venture capitalists, and experienced social entrepreneurs. Over the course of seven months, 'Zero-1' participants honed their business concepts, receiving valuable feedback during their pitches, leading to awards for standout performances. A thematic talk session, 'The Future of Impact Startups and Large Corporations: Tackling Social Issues,' provided further insights into collaborative efforts between the sectors. Yusuke Mizuno and ISA member company CEO, Mari Sakuramoto from Coach-H, contributed as speakers for these sessions.
