In an ambitious move to improve healthcare access across Long Island, NYU Langone Health has revealed plans to construct a cutting-edge academic medical center in Melville, strategically located near the borders of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. With a mission focused on integrating advanced medical services and educational opportunities, this initiative underscores the health system's commitment to serving the local community.

The new campus will span an impressive 45 acres and will feature a modern hospital equipped with more than 500 private inpatient rooms, over 70 emergency department bays, and state-of-the-art operating theaters designed for specialized procedures. One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the inclusion of the tuition-free NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, reflecting NYU Langone's dedication to enhancing medical education and research while prioritizing healthcare quality.

Alec C. Kimmelman, MD, PhD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone, expressed the transformative potential of this project for the Long Island community. 'The benefits to Long Island—a community I grew up in—will allow us to better serve patients across Nassau and Suffolk Counties with high-quality care,' he commented. 'We are committed to collaborating with local officials and the community to ensure this project aligns with their vision.'

The construction phase is expected to create a significant number of jobs, approximately 8,000 in union-represented roles and 2,500 additional indirect jobs throughout the region. Once the medical center is operational, it promises to generate thousands of permanent employment opportunities, further solidifying NYU Langone's presence in the area.

Fiona B. Druckenmiller, chair of NYU Langone's Board of Trustees, highlighted the importance of this initiative in extending services to an already established network of over 120 physician practices spread across Long Island. This strategy aims to elevate the level of medical care available to communities while fostering educational and research endeavors.

He remarked, 'This academic medical center represents a dedicated effort to expand access to top-notch care while nurturing the future of medical education and research.'

Positioned within the Town of Huntington, the new medical facility will also enhance the local vision for redefining the Melville Town Center. The campus is designed to accommodate healthcare professionals, enhancing community vitality and interaction while creating a collaborative environment for training medical residents and students.

Moreover, NYU Langone's commitment to bolstering primary care on the island is evident. The healthcare system strives to provide clear pathways for students pursuing medical careers, emphasizing retention within the communities they serve. Impressively, 40% of recent graduates plan to remain on Long Island, contributing positively to local health needs.

In response to a growing demand for exceptional healthcare, NYU Langone plans to broaden emergency and specialty services in Mineola, including oncology, cardiology, and neurology. These expanded services will continue to operate in Mineola even after the Melville campus opens, ensuring a comprehensive network of care throughout the region.

In conjunction with its strategic plans, NYU Langone is also enhancing its ambulatory care offerings. This includes anticipated radiation oncology services at the Research and Academic Center in Mineola and significant renovations at the Perlmutter Cancer Center's location.
