Black Bear Sports Group Welcomes 10,000 New Young Hockey Players



In a remarkable initiative, Black Bear Sports Group (BBSG), a leading entity in ice arena operations and youth hockey leagues across the United States, has successfully introduced 10,000 young individuals to the exhilarating world of hockey this season. Their innovative programs, which are both free and entry-level, have removed significant barriers that often deter families from engaging in the sport.

With the launch of the Take a Shot at Hockey (TASH) program, which operates at approximately 65% of Black Bear's ice arenas, BBSG has attracted over 3,200 first-time players to the sport in its debut year. This initiative aims to provide a no-cost introduction to hockey for children aged 4 to 9, featuring certified instruction, access to ice time, and comprehensive equipment loans—ensuring new participants can comfortably step onto the ice without financial worry.

In addition to the TASH program, over 5,600 children are currently participating in Black Bear’s structured Learn to Play Hockey programs, along with 1,100 players who are advancing through the NHL/NHLPA Learn to Play initiative, also hosted at Black Bear arenas. The fusion of these programs emphasizes BBSG’s commitment to nurturing young talent and enhancing their overall hockey experience.

Kevin Kuby, CEO of Black Bear Sports Group, stated, "Growing the game starts with making the first step feel accessible for families. `Take a Shot at Hockey` was designed to provide newcomers with a warm and affordable introduction to the sport. The early positive outcomes highlight the vast potential to engage families when a clear pathway into hockey is presented."

Looking ahead, Black Bear Sports Group aims to expand the TASH program across all its arenas for the 2026-27 season, with an ambitious target of introducing an additional 7,500 players to hockey via this initiative. After completing the TASH program, young athletes can transition into affordable options within the Learn to Play Hockey program, further bolstering the growth of youth hockey across the nation.

A comprehensive youth hockey ecosystem has already developed under BBSG’s leadership, currently boasting over 475 competitive youth teams for boys and girls, ranging from 8U to 18U. Notably, participation growth in their programs is reportedly over three times the national average, signaling a vibrant future for youth hockey.
